An EV charging at night rate has very much less impact on the network than an electric heater running at peak.  Presumably the EV tariff is all about ensuring EVs don't have an impact on the network by encouraging people to charge them overnight instead of just plugging straight in when they get home from work.  I don't think the tariff will have the same appeal to those Briscoes heater buyers, they probably wont want to delay using them till 2am.

My point exactly. There's often people talking about the impact EVs have on the network with how much power they use, but an EV can, and often are charged off peak, a heater isn't. But you don't hear people complaining about someone buying another heater for their home and plugging it in!

when winter months, prices are at their very highest, AND demand is at their highest

I'm not sure how you can say these prices are high!

I'm currently paying 9.9c/kWh + GST

Is that 9.9cents total? No other bits and bobs?  Nice

Genesis has a 9 or 10 c weekday off peak, and included all weekend.

As always with spot prices it's the current price, but that is everything apart from GST.

Off peak prices are M-F 11:00-17:00, 21:00-07:00 and all weekend.

This is in Wellington and I don't know if other areas have anything similar, but when I looked at Genesis prices available to me they work out higher overall, and they're not passing on the daytime or weekend off peak.

Flick CHC

Here in Christchurch, Flick price is a lot higher. My Flick account doesn't show the price but it does show the meter level when I log in. Anyone in Chch can share their current Flick price will help.

Those in Christchurch, Genesis DOES pass on low off peak (night rate) over the weekend, from Friday 9PM to Monday 7AM.

I'm looking at the new electric vehicle plan that Wellington Electricity have introduced, and, I can't help feeling that people would be better off on the day / night plan (that is still available for certain meter setups). Here is the Comparison for normal user.

Electric vehicle plan

RSUEVB-PEAK 0.1103
RSUEVB-OFFPEAK 0.0250

Day / Night plan

RSU-AICO 0.0499
RSU-NITE 0.0173

And for low user

Electric vehicle plan

RLUEVB-PEAK .1536
RLUEVB-OFFPEAK .0683

Day / Night plan

RLU-AICO .0929
RLU-NITE .0189

Anyone see anything I've missed? I am currently on the low user day / night plan and receiving those rates.

Edit - I know the day / night vs peak / off peak rates don't line up, however, the extra 3c unit over the weekend 7am - 11pm doesn't make up for the difference in the rates the other times.

The day / night plan is not available to everybody though. I am on a single meter so could only have the 'Uncontrolled Anytime' rate. Anyone with an EV (12kWh or higher) or home battery storage (4kWh or higher) can go on the EVB tariff. For me this works out a lot better, but understand that no single tariff works for everyone.

25.61c /kW/hr

What's the peak hour rate when Orion Network kicks in their 9c sur-charge week days from 7am to 10am and 5pm to 7pm for those in Christchurch?

My cousin's mother-in-law lives in a newly built 2 bedroom house in Wigram Sky (a very small attached dwelling 2 bedroom house). She's been complaining $75/week with Flick and I can assure you they're not using 8000 kw/hrs a year. Why? What would be a reasonable power bill for a newly built house?

It's easy. Go to http://www.em6live.co.nz to find the spot prices for your area (divide by 1000 to get the cost in kWh). Then add on the fixed charges from here https://assets.ctfassets.net/8pjb06am7y41/FOuDJDMyswSAiU8AUS2mm/0d10bf97bb95f679d41d37fc02f90d07/Christchurch_Pricing_Schedule_Apr_1_18.pdf

Daily charge 97.5c

Peak 14.009c/kWh + spot

Off Peak 5.886c/kWh + spot

Winter Peak 23.089c/kWh + spot

Currently (16.07.18 @ 1345) spot prices are approx 5.7c/kWh so just over 19.7c/kWh as you're in peak time

There are ways of getting it back though. I didn't need to do anything to retain mine, @zerkms had more details earlier in this thread.

Note - with (perhaps only some) smart meters, you don't need separate meters. I only have a single smart meter, and, it allows me to have the day / night plan.

You cannot base the fact that you think someone is being charged so much with Flick based purely on the fact that they live in a newly built 2 bedroom house. Their bills can differ wildly based on how they use their power.

You can ONLY base on whether Flick is costing them more by comparing their actual usage against other providers.

Flick allow you to download your 30 minute usage back for over 12 months now. Get that info, then compare what they've been billed against other providers rates.

Thats what I do, and I can assure you I am making a long term saving over any other provider (apart from Paua to the People as their admin rates are slightly cheaper than Flick).

If you can retain the old day / night rate it could possibly be worth doing. Is the night rate for the whole house or just certain appliances? Is it controlled under this tariff?

I assume that rate of 25.61c lasts all year round?..

Was that a special price they offered to you personally? Or is it advertised on their website? I just see this:
