Yeah - that was sooo obvious that the houses had been trashed by the producers.
Way over the top and very lame in my opinion.

I believe the houses are 74-80 Anzac St in Takapuna.

Mark Richardson is a pretty good choice for host.

Which Aussie season was it? Was it a new one and just played recently on Prime?

It was season 5 based in Melbourne. It was the first time it hasn't been aired in New Zealand though which was a shame. I have the whole series if you want it.

not sure if you new, some contestants did not earn a cent due to housing market slump in melbourne

I watched the final and I would find that hard to believe.

but didn't know i was so out of date ... so the 2012 one was in melb too huh

anyway channel nine did say they would "look after" the poor losers so maybe they paid them an undisclosed low 5 figure sum

I don't think so, nor would most trades people agree with you I suspect.

I would say that people are so brainwashed in this country that what you used to do 20 years ago now has to have the blessing of every local and central Gov bureaucrat. We've become a country too scared to do anything these days unless big brother gives it their blessing.

There are some really good workplace safety systems out there that are not all waffle. Just taking a step back and identifying what you are going to be doing is something that is a pretty big part of all the safety training I've been through. I really respect the systems in place that aim for zero harm and focus on you going home with all your fingers and toes.

The she'll be right attitude doesn't cut it anymore. Hell your getting paid now to do it safely so why not. There are so many workplace accidents because of that attitude.

Instead of prosecuting, those breaching rules should sign contracts stating that they will pay for any insurance / health costs in lieu of compensation. Kinda like 20+ years ago prior to ACC.......

I walk past "the Block" four times a day (to work, then home for lunch, then back to work) The houses were in ok nick to start with, just overgrown with tenants who didn't keep them very tidy.

I actually thought once they set them up for the show (IE before the contestants got there) they looked better. I was curious why there were numbers painted on them though!

It's weird, I don't know what the contestants actually do, I've never seen them there when I've been past. Just tradesmen.

And I haven't watched the show, just the ads.

Now you can't always find a run down block of flats, but I really preferred the show when it was all being undertaken in a block. The contestants were all in the same location and there was none of this other extension type building work going on around them.

I haven't seen 2012's 2nd Melbourne block series but the 2011 one was quite weird in that they had all these random as challenges away from the houses and there were trades people everywhere employed by the TV show to develop the houses further, prior to the contestants finishing off each new room. Don't know why, but it's seeming more and more fake with the actual TV company driving the upgrades and house structure along at the same time.

Yeah, those auction results showed how emotional some people can be when purchasing property, resulting in completely off kilter prices. All four houses were in the same location, were a similar size, and the only real differentiator were minor stylistic differences. There is no way there should've been a 150K difference in price between the four of them.

I also am struggling to comprehend that Ben and Libby's house is worth anywhere near what was paid for it. Sure, location is important, but we paid $730K in March for a 9 year old 260 m2 5 bedroom house with 3 living areas, 3 bathrooms (and two stand alone toilets), and with water & city views from some rooms. Its not Takapuna, but its still only 10 minutes away from the CBD when there's no traffic, and is on a much quieter street. For the price that this tiny 3 bedroom bungalow went for, we'd have a house in our area that was a similar size to ours, with unobstructed waterfront views of the harbour bridge and CBD skyline.
