90 mins includes drying time, it might not get off super hard stuff but general stuff is fine. There's a super fast wash that doesn't dry the dishes but I don't use that, that's more like 20 mins.

Miele and Bosch are right up there.
Miele if you can afford it... well, that's beautifully made kit that is designed to last at least 20 years.
The downside, you rarely see them on special as they are all consignment stock, so the retailer can't discount them. The positive to that, is that the price includes delivery ex-importer.
I have a condenser dryer and it's brilliant, as is the vacuum cleaner.
When we replace our F&P washing machine it'll either be with a Bosch or Miele (depending on budget at the time).

richrdh18: we went to top of the range single unit ELBA (f&P), this broke down once under warranty and now it is approx 6months outside its warranty, it is beyond economincal repair.

ELBA is not really F&P, but a rebranded chinese made appliance (don't recall who sorry).

Aren't they their house brand? Peronsally I would prefer a bosch or miele or asko. Have an asko washing machine, front loader, that is 20 years old.

Smeg is an Italian brand which used to be quite well known in this market, but doesn't seem to be as widely available these days. As far as I recall their reliability was never stellar.

Having bought LG appliances when I moved in here I'm pretty impressed with the quality of the modern Korean stuff, but even within a particular brand you still get what you pay for. The fridge was the cheapest model at the time and I'm starting to get a bit bothered by the cheap plastic racks and trays inside it, but I was willing to spend more on the washing machine to get a front loader and it's a very solid unit with great features and sensible design.

When I was in there, I recall them tellin m e it was their house brand. But I guess that may mean that they are the only ones that sell the brand. I do have a smeg microwave, and it is OK, but wouldn't say it is up their with bosch or meile stuff in terms of build quality.
Some appliances though are just rebadged.

We've got the basic Haier white dishwasher. It was brand new when we bought our house three years ago and I'd hoped it would be dead by now so I could justify replacing it. It's noisy and doesn't get plastic containers particularly dry but for around $550-$650 it is incredibly difficult to fault.

It's not a high performing appliance but it has a very low price tag and it works fine. It does the basic job of getting he dishes clean pretty well.

Plastic containers aren't always dry even in the Bosch. I know nothing about Smeg, just passing on what I heard on the radio.

I use mine 15 yo fnp everyday taks twenty minutes cleans anything you throw at it but it's reached the end of its life And we are planning to move house

ALONG with two to three heat pumps and the electrolux dryer and all other g adgetry power bill is 150 -250 a month

It does get a bit annoying when you have to manually dry stuff, even when it's been run overnight. The biggest issue with the Haier is noise. Compared to other more expensive dishwashers it seems twice as noisy and in our open plan kitchen / dining room / lounge that is a pain. If I had a rental to buy a dishwasher for I'd be happy to buy a Haier though.

Couldn't be happier with it. We upgraded from a Beaumatic (which is of the same pedigree as Haier) and the difference is night and day. We went in looking to buy a Bosch but the LG sold us with much larger internal space. It has a direct drive motor (whatever that means) but the result is about 50mm more space inside the washing compartment cause the motor section is a lot smaller. The biggest improvement is the noise, the Beaumatic was so noisy we had to turn the TV up louder. Now the noise is just about inaudible. Just the occasional noise when it drains etc. It also has nice features such as in built water softener. We paid $1275 or the stainless model. You should be able to get the white version for under $1200. Worth every penny. It also has a 10 year warranty on the motor (whether or not that is of any use is debatable).

I know it's slightly off topic, but we bought a Panasonic Front Load Washing machine last October and I couldn't be happier with it.
It's 10Kg, uber quiet and so efficient on water (and with me being on Tank water, has saved us from having to buy any water so far this dry summer - which would be $200+ a load)

As for dishwashers, I do beleive you get what you pay for, and anything sub $800 isn't going to be all that quiet. We have a double dishdrawer, and it's been great - cleans and drys well (except for some plastic lunch containers) and very quiet.

The reason plastic containers don't dry in most modern dishwashers is because they no longer have a heating element. Drying dishes relies on the residual heat in the dishes, and plastic doesn't hold much heat.
Obviously modern dishwashers have an in-line water heater, but it doesn't heat the air during the drying cycle.

The up side is that you can ignore the 'top rack only' labels.

Some modern dishwashers improve the drying by fan-forced ventillation (eg F&P dish drawer) or other techniques like dessicants.
