Yep, or just find out how much a local garage door repair guy charges. Im sure there would be an old guy out there somewhere who knows all about component level diagnostics.
It turned out to be what at a couple of posters suggested, a loose solder joint...dead simple to fix. So it would have been the vibration of the whole unit that was moving the component, breaking the connection and making the problem intermittent.
