We have a Saeco automatic machine at home (Grinds it own beans etc) and it blows Nespresso (and most Cafes) out of the water.

I can't drink Nespresso - it always just tastes stale. I don't have milk in my coffee, but if you do, it's probably more tolerable.

The only way I drink Nespresso is as espresso, on demitasses. Never added milk and it tastes better to me than a lot of espressos I get around Wellington (some cafes can be really awful at producing coffee).

picked up one of these machines today for $69 (the Mini one). I like the hot chocs that it makes.

The Nescafe range (which is not to be confused with Nespresso) is a milk-based line. I haven't tried their machines yet but from the one tsaste I had from their "cappucino" in a box... They put sugar in that thing!

It's also made from milk powder, which is never going to taste the same as fresh milk

Sure, you can be cynical. But they do have this spelled out here and have their whole thing about sustainability here.

If you're cynical about their recycling initiatives then I wouldn't mind you being cynical about the mobile telcos recycling ones, the city councils electronics disposal days ones, etc, etc...

Basically, my thinking is that they say they do and put money into that. So unless you can prove they don't then I can't see why not.

I followed the link hoping, but not expecting, to be proven wrong. You have to be a member of their club (this is sounding more and more like those snake oil ads on the radio) and then you can return the used capsules to their store while they think about recycling possibilities. They will however try to sell you a special nespresso recycling box to use for carrying the capsules back to the shop. Nice.

As for the second part, I am cynical about all recycling here. I know what real recycling looks like in a country that takes it seriously.

Hey just seen this thread so here is my 2cents. I have owned a nespresso machine since 2010 I have had 2 the real deal machines a great quality and if you do have a issue nespresso's customer service is second to none! I had a fault with a milk jug let them know 3.30pm on a Thursday 9.30am Friday a new jug turned up at work, outstanding stuff. But now I notice the stale taste in the coffee and I'm now selling my lattisma+ and going I'm going to get a grinder and manual leaver machine you can't beat fresh ground coffee done right! It's ok for ease of use but When I rate the coffee next to my $15 stove top I give nespresso a 2/10 and the stove top a 7/10

+heaps for a stovetop, the boiler in my machine crapped out recently and I had to drag the old stovetop out, the taste is subtly different to a pumped machine, but superior (in my opinion) to what I have had out of a Nespresso. The latter wins on mess minimization I must admit :)

My brother has a nepresso machine.

Good:

Coffee is really good and consistent.
It's super conveinent.
It takes up no bench space.
There is limited clean up job.
You don't have to attend the machine while it makes the coffee
The milk frother is always a push button, then walk away device.
Order pods online, get them delivered to your door

Bad:

Pods are more expensive that a traditional machine with a grinder.
I would even say the pods are rediculously overpriced for what they are, they should only cost 50c each (or less)
Environmental impact.
Too slow if you want to make more than 2 coffees at once.

Wow some coffee snobs around here can get pretty religious lol.

We have an Lattissima+ at home and the office which we love, It's good coffee thats quick and simply enough that our 7 year old daughter can make us a cup in the morning! I am not a morning person and dont really function first thing so a full blown espresso machine is going to make a bad cup of coffee if I try in the morning.

It may not be the best coffee overall but it beats any of the sludge they sell in Whangarei. If you want something thats a massive step up from instant without the hassle and mess of grinding + espresso then go for it. If you simply must have the best coffee around give it a pass.

As for recycling the capsules it's all ally + grounds so if you care that much empty them and put them in your recycling bin

Most problems are the result of previous solutions...

I guess that having partaken in another thread on GZ on this subject, quasi-religious zeal seems to come mainly from the proponents for pod systems. Nestle have done a superb social media marketing job on Nespresso, as well as what will be extremely expensive celebrity endorsement. They have also done a good job and made sure that there are very many so-called "review" sites which rank highly on Google searches, which consist of the same or rehashed wording - making some pretty outrageous claims about quality which independent / real review sites never seem to be able to replicate.
Pointing this out is seen as an attack on the product - which it isn't. Nespresso is okay for what it is - but it's not great, and it is very expensive even if the machines are cheap. Many cafes make bad coffee (either through laziness or poor training), restaurants (even good ones) typically make lousy coffee (they might have many chefs - but seldom a barista, the beans are usually stale, the machines poorly cleaned and maintained etc).
Many times you'll read that you can't make cafe quality espresso at home. I strongly disagree with that.

If you read the thread you are talking about again you will see that actually the supporters of non-pod systems are the ones that have been strongly replying.

I have had a couple of espresso machines and a couple of pod machines. I like the ease of use, quick consistent results.

I don't think Nespresso has done a good job in social media as you claim. They actually have a lousy Twitter presence and a Facebook presence but most of the times don't reply to questions people post to the them. This is an instant no-no in my books, making it actually a hack job on that.
