Yeah, I don't think I need a data-safe level of fire protection as I have a computer in the US that I'm setting up to handle the offsite storage. Mostly just keeping documents/papers and a few valuables safe I think. It probably doesn't even need to be impossible for someone to try and remove/breach, just be difficult/time consuming enough to deter. If they bring heavy machinery good for them.

I'll probably go for the middle category one as it looks like it's about secure enough and has the benefit of fire protection.

I'll step in quickly and tell you that none of you who say you have a fire proof safe actually have a fire proof safe. You have fire resistant safes and these will be rated to protect the contents for a specific amount of time at a specific temperature. This time/temperature will be listed in the documentation for your safe.

The best thing to do is speak with a specialist seller in this area to get the best advice then make your decision from there - also use the internet to compare ratings over various brands. Obviously the longer you want items protected the more expensive a safe is going to be.

hmm talking about safes we used to have fixed deposit boxes in the 2 big cities in the south island but since the earthquakes everyone's stopped their services! anyone knows where i can find a fixed deposit box in the south island?

Personally, I think I'd rather get a bit of PVC 150 mm pipe, a cap and a screw cap end. Chuck my valuables in it and bury it about 500 mm down under my crawl space.

It would be more like a time capsule in terms of accessibility, but at least it would be pretty resistant to fire.

Just saw on YouTube how a safe that looked like mine could be opened by tapping it in the right place. Even with a potato!!

Not very happy about that, but also quite amused.

^ this; I can't recall what duration ours is good for, but they have their limitations. Also they can be fire resistant for different types of items being stored - ie the requirements for disc drives, documents, cd's, jewellery is all different due to their tolerance of heat.

You need to be clear about what you are wanting the safe for - is it just for security (ie don't need/want fire protection), or do you want other features as well.
I ended up getting one shipped from the US (thanks Amazon); ours is fire and water resistant safe which is bolted to the floor. Shipping was fairly expensive (as expected), but the final price was still below what local companies were wanting to charge for lesser products. I went into it with a little understanding of what I wanted, but by the time I purchased I was very clear in what my requirements were - research is your friend! :)

A small $140 safe costs $325 to ship to NZ via Amazon. I'm thinking buying locally may be better value at the moment. Youshop charges would be about the same for their 30kg limit.

yeah checking our order, the delivery fee (2 years back) was just under $300; however for the features and quality of the product, getting something in NZ (at the time at least) for any comparable price was just not possible....don't know if things have normalised or not - but at the time I remember it being a no-brainer.

Any good locksmith should have access to a range of safes if you want to buy one.

I know Beveridge locksmiths here in Wellington (on Vivian St) used to have a number of them in the front window of their store.

I have a small combination & key fireproof safe (can't recall the brand) but I can tell you I don't open it often and thus very frequently forget the code so have come to just leave the combination set and hide the key. I figure if anyone is going in there to steal it they'll bump the combination first before they get the key in to try it. *shrug* it's not ideal but it works.

At the time was about $675 excl GST and delivery/installation was about $145. Really good safe and have been really happy with it. We use it for keeping work backup drives in it as well as the usual passports, insurance docs etc etc.
