Can't you just stop the fan from spinning with a finger or a paperclip or something while blowing it to prevent bearing damage?? That's the main place my PC hoards dust...

Niel: On a practical note, it is fun blowing air through a fan but do it only briefly a few times or else you will either kill the bearing or snap off a fin - been there done that.

Hmmm sounds like something the kids and I need to test with an old CPU fan - with suitable precautions.  :)

At work I use a (new) paint brush & a vaccumm cleaner .
For the CPU heatsink I have a paintbrush with most of the bristles cut off, just poke it in there & it does the job.

Seems a bit extreme to buy a compressor just to clean a PC

Static discharge from a paintbrush tho, as well as vacuum cleaners (if you get them real close to components)

Pretty much something you wont have to worry about. ie a nonsnsense in the real world

Static buildup also from air compressors blowing air, from walking across carpet , from sitting on some office chairs (I know of offfice workers getting zaps they can feel) , from wearing artificial fibres (ie clothes not made from cotton) , from carrying the PC out to the garage to blow it out ......

Static isnt such a big issue when the components are soldered onto a properly designed board .

I use a small airbursh compressor and it works great. If you want to see where the dust really gets to pull your video card, spend 5 minutes undoing the plastic shroud screws, unclip and look at the cooling fins around the card - mine were packed solid with dust..Cleaned them all out and dropped the card temp by about 14 degrees during gameplay. Was gobsmacked !
