It seems like different brands excel in some types of appliances over others. For example I have found F&P fridges and washings machines to be quite good and reliable, but not their dishwashers, which don't dry stuff properly.

Don't know where people are shopping but wall ovens start at $520, and that's for a fan oven. Indesit is a good reliable brand, not known here but big in the UK. Of course there will be brand snobs out there, but at the end of the day most of us are not rich and don't have a huge disposable income. Comes with a 2 year warranty so you can't go wrong :-)

Better brands will often be better built, and last longer. It can be false economy going too cheap , and you don't want to replace an oven every two years as cheap stuff has less CGA protection than higher value stuff. Don't have and experience with the brand above but I try to stick to middle of the road brands and pricing.

Nothing wrong with indesit - they turn over euro 2.9 billion a year. I flatted in a house with indesit appliances and they were fine. Funnily enough they own the Ariston brand.

I bought a Beko oven for my new kitchen last year and it is excellent. Beko is a large Turkish brand but unknown in NZ. It pays to shop around and do a lot of reading.

Do you even use the clock / timer unit? if not then just ask the electrician to bypass it.

Ok so buying ovens is like shopping for cars there are millions of type with evolving technology! I thought you just turned a dial to produce heat.

So I'm going to attempt a temp fix on the old one while I wait for sales. The appliance service person thinks she can bypass the clock for just over a hundred bucks.

Shall I Google for a DIY click bypass steps or is it illegal?

I know that this is a little late but I think that we have the same model as you at home (based on your description).

We had the same thing happen to us and we got a tech out to fix it and it was a simple job in which all he did was circumvent the need for the clock. Apparently not all models are like this but we were lucky as the replacement parts no longer existed so we would have had to buy a whole new oven...

I'd be googling to fix it yourself. It looked like bugger all work he did to fix ours.

Get an electrician, taking the faceplate off is the wrong way to go about it.

While it is legal to repair you own appliances, if you don't have the skills to access the internals of the oven, then you most likely don't have the skills to do the bypass without causing a fire hazard.

wow I managed to get to the wiring (pat myself on the back!)

I see 2 burnt thing - can anyone shed light on what could be wrong? (yes I will buy a new oven when on sale, but the curiosity is overwhelming) thank you so much

PS - the when I switch the mains on it makes a metallic thud sound, but the digital clock and everything else does not come on. dead as. something is burnt obviously, but what is it? thanks

The burnt things would be the problem.

What comes to mind is that your are not making the connection between something that is burnt and the potential for a fire. It seems like you are still trying to use the oven and the ever increasing risk of this electrical fault developing in to a full blown fire.

Turn it off at the wall, get an appliance service person or electrician to come and fix it and don't use it until it is fixed
