My new Bosch gets things mostly dry, other than a few drops on cutlery in the top tray (which is awesome) and on plastic containers. Generally pretty good.

Repair costs could be hundreds. Tough call.

Efficiency is driven by legislation, and it is the innovative designers that can work with it and produce a design that works.

It should not go smelly if left closed for a few days, it is (supposed to be) sterilized.  Unless the diswasher is not cleaned periodically to remove build-up (mainly around the door seal) and the filter emptied.

The not pumping out might be something you can fix easily yourself. It could easily be just a toothpick or something.

Remove the bottom sieve and check for bits that could jam the pump. You usually twist the plastic part that pokes up through the sieve and then the whole lot lifts out.

Our very first dishwasher we ever bought was like less than $20 off TradeMe which apparently would occasionally flood.  It was a piece of wine glass blocking the 2-piece strainer basket and I guess the seller did not realise you can split the basket in two so did not see it stuck inside.  We used it at least once a day for many years with no issues at all, until a new house build meant getting new appliances.

If you're handy you should be able to replace the pump your self if it has failed. I did on our F&P. But F&P parts are cheap. For a Bosch pump I doubt you'd get much change from $150.

The display issue may just be a dry joint on the PCB however Able might just replace the entire PCB/controller module which I would guess at ~$400 + labour.

Being a Bosch I doubt you'd have trouble sourcing parts even for an 8 year old machine.

I would go with the quote. Seems pretty reasonable for Bosch. I'm sure the parts aren't cheap, being European!

Just make sure the quote is what you actually get charged. I have been stung in the past before with a quote not being what I was billed.

I just got a Westinghouse Dishwasher from Harveys, it has a drying fan and a cutlery tray, so hoping it doesn't have issues with wet dishes coming out. (Yet to install)

richms: Older dishwashers would actually get things dry. I have used 2 newer ones in peoples houses and things sit in them wet once they are finished because apparantly drying uses too much power.

If yours is old enough to have an element that gets things hot so they dry then definatly repair.

Yah drying isn't good in new washing machines either.
Our current one dishes are too hot to touch for 3 minutes after we open to "air" it.

It's not widely known if you don't open dishwasher when it first finishes, dishes will not dry properly.

F&P ones don't dry things, as we have one, and things are wet when they come out of it. Bosch though do dry fine. The older dishwashers used to have a heating element in the bottom to dry things, but todays ones tend to use a fan.

You should be more specific about the model and what settings you are using. Usually the faster the wash cycle then the lower the temperature and the slower the drying. We have used about five different models of F&P dishwashers over the last 20 years and they all dried dishes properly. The only items which don't dry easily are some plastics and brushes.

Also, as networkn points out, if you want really dry dishes then the manufacturers recommended to at least open the door for a moment at the end of the cycle to let out the very humid air. Our current F&P beeps before the end of the cycle to let us know that door should be opened.

I don't have any issues with drying in our FP Dishdrawer either...it's ten years old.

It is meant to stay closed for drying, or opened only briefly to get the bulk of steam out.  The idea is that the ambient air is cooler, so moisture will condense on the cabinet shell before it would condense on the dishes.  Plastic is a pain to dry in a dishwasher, there is no thermal mass.

After speaking with a couple of different repair places, the list of issues and estimates of cost ranged from $600-1200 and we decided neither amount was worth spending on a near 10 year old dishwasher though abel seemed confident that was all that usually goes wrong with them and it should last 15 years.

We went to kitchen things who we buy most our major kitchen stuff through and found the direct replacement based on current technology, RRP $2899 they offered us $2199. On the way home stopped at appliance shed for a quick look and got offered cheaper install and $100 cheaper price. Called KT back and they weren't too happy since the model they offered us is supposed to be exclusive to them, but compromised and we split the difference. They called back an hour later saying they couldn't do the deal as it was below cost and they called bosch to complain the model should not have been offered elsewhere. I obviously wasn't happy, and the sales person knew it. He called back apologising and saying he had sent an email to the regional manager to explain he had agreed to the price and then the system wouldn't do the pricing and will come back tomorrow. Hopefully they do the deal, otherwise that is the last KT purchase I'll make.

I've dealt with this sales person a long time, so I expect he will manage to do it, though I wish it had been without the hassle.

I have difficulty believing that while KT would offer you a dishwasher at $2199, $50 less than this was truly "below cost".
I'd also take issue with them calling Bosch to complain.  While they might be free to negotiate an exclusive deal, under the circumstances that smacks of being an arrangement to control/fix pricing.

Agreed on both points, and if I don't get the the result I am after, I'll be dealing with it accordingly. They also called Appliance Shed and told them they aren't allowed to offer that model. I am unsure how that affects the final outcome, but as I said, I'll be raising mighty hell if this falls over, only because I think they are pricing fixing etc.
