hangon: we looked at whole house filtration before - it's not necessary for us, shower may benefit a little, toilet flush nuh.

it's also more expensive to install and run, reduce shower pressure, and generally i have doubts with said brand and their sales pitch

I understand the "sales pitch" thing some of those operations are over the top. Forgot about the drop in pressure.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

KiwiNZ: I think its HRV but one of the Ventilation companies do water filtration where they filter all the water going into the home at a central point of the home, this means Bathroom water kitchen water and both hot and cold is filtered.

HRV, and have you had a look at the price, its almost 3k

Holy $%^%$ that is a big hit for something that for most areas in NZ is a waste given our water standard. That is inline with other HRV pricing that is holy %^%$

I would have expected HRV to mix the incoming clean water with water from the drain in order to pre-heat it. Isn't that how their air systems work?

They do, and that also means you are filtering toilet water, laundry water, maybe water that goes to some of your outside taps.

The more water you filter, the more filters you get through, the more money you spend on them.

That's how their most expensive air systems work, but not their regular ones. They don't mix it they put it through a heat exchanger - though I know you posted in jest.

Do you just want to remove bits of stuff from the water (grit, floaties etc), or really filter out everything

from memory...
The usual charcoal type filter wont remove everything, some chemicals(Fluoride?) will go straight through . Its good for removing chlorine
Ion exchange is good for removing some nasty chemicals, I stopped using that type after I read that it puts sodium back into the water (as part of the ion exchange)
Distillers also dont remove everything, thats why they also need charcoal filters

Perhaps the way to go would be a Reverse Osmosis unit ?
