Also you might want to include a in-line fuse. I know you did not wnat to go down the DIY path but I can't see any 'off the shelf' products which fits your requirements.

Isn't this something that might be very important one day? When was the last time you heard of cheap crap lasting the distance? Would you recommend someone get a $10 HDD as an emergency backup?

Yes I agree, good hard drives used to cost many hundreds of dollars. Server hard drives still can cost $300++
Who in their right mind would buy a $70 WD sata hard drive or $90 USB hard drive ???

Ive bought plenty of cheap stuff, most of it does the job. Do you really think the $50 12v-to-USB device will be any different than something for $10
Probably same thing with a different label.
Stuff sourced direct from china is insanly cheap, the issue is most assume that paying more is an indication of quality. It isnt.
Ive been hearing this cheap=nasty line for years, often from those who simply will not accept that cheap stuff is often good enough to do the job.
Sometimes the Asian brand at 1/4 the cost is simply better.

Anyway, try Bangood , Goodluckbuy, Gearbest. They will have something, but you may have to attach connectors that will clip onto the batt.
Go to bangood, have a look at just how cheap stuff really is. Its only when it hits NZ shops that the cost is what we are used to.

This one looks pretty good, well polished. Probably should've held off until I got more opinions, but the other one at $5 could be a good backup :)

Check the charging current. Also, fusing is a must.

I was hoping not to DIY this one, I wonder if any of those products have a fuse built in. If not I can get a fuse holder, fuse, and put it into a little box. Could be messy, but this is disaster scenario use so as long as it's functional and reliable I don't really mind.

Looks like a good product, more commercial, though I'd have to replace the cable to go onto the battery. More expensive too.

Right now I only have a 7AH battery while I'm testing, but I'll probably end up with a 28AH Panasonic long life battery, or similar. It's complete overkill of course.

Given I'll use the 7AH battery as a UPS and the big battery as standby I may need an additional SLA charger. The trick will be finding one that says it can support a battery that large. The Sentry Lite unit I'll use it with said it'd be fine, it limits charge current at 400mah so it would take three days to charge, but I don't really care if it takes a week.
