Smartvent offer (or used to) a system that integrates a ducted heat pump with a heat recovery balanced ventilation system.

In theory heat recovery can be like 90%, in practice the commonly available variants are only about 60% efficient if that much.  So if you plumb an aircon into a heat recovery ventilation system, then you will be financially better off by just using electric heaters in the house as the aircon would not pay for itself in its lifetime.  Or use a heat pump between the inlet and exhaust vent rather than a heat recovery + external radiator heat pump, that way the heat pump has warm air to extract energy from rather than cold outside air.

But as others said, probably just install a split unit (I'm now scared of calling it either a heat pump or aircon...).

That seemed to be how the system smart vent offer(ed) operates.
