networkn: I'd be temped to go to free standing if we had to consider redoing our cabinetry.

I'd love a unit that did GAS/Induction on the top and a 60cm oven with a warming drawer. I imagine that would cost billions!

Yes - I'd like gas/induction combo - but haven't seen any solution in a free-standing oven. Benchtop, then you could use separate 2/3 burner hobs.
Induction has a lot going for it, but the flaws totally kill it as a sole solution IMO.

Try grilling a capsicum over an induction hob, or using a wok (properly) or waving a small hand-held small pan over the flame.

We have bought the top of the range F&P oven (11 function, rotisserie, meat thermometer, pyrolitic cleaning etc) for our new kitchen. However it is still packed up in our container as our renovation keeps getting put back. I was convinced by a great demonstration at Kitchen Things in Dunedin to buy F&P - we have also purchased induction hob, double dish drawers and front loading washing machine.

The F&P range was not cheap, although we did get a great deal - Farmers are always having F&P sales (20% off) and Kitchen Things matched the prices across the whole range. My recollection was that the Bosch range was equally functional and stylish, however Bosch were even more expensive than F&P.

I'll report back when everything is unpacked and working - 4 months!!

I can't wait that long, but thanks. Would you mind sharing what you paid for your F&P oven, I suspect if it's the 60cm one, it's the same one we are thinking about buying.

Hmm, I don't suppose you would have even a ball park figure on what that might cost to get fixed? The oven is 9 years old, unsure if it's worth repairing for fear of another thing breaking.

We just had a rear element replaced on our 5 year old Delonghi for about $140 incl labour. I realize its not the same brand but might give an indication.

Comes with both a gas and an electric oven. And you can spec the cooktop options to almost anything you want. So gas and induction is definitely no problem. As for the price - at least 20K and you can even go as far as 100K. But they are hand made. So that is where the cost goes to.

I have installed and repaired a few of them. (mostly the other models though) So yes they are good quality. But you sure pay for it.

Back to the OP question. We have a Smeg pyrolitic oven and I would NOT recommend it. While it cooks really well, we have already had a repairman to it twice in the first twelve months. Firstly to replace the entire oven because the door was so badly misaligned that it would not fit in cavity properly and the second when the setting knob failed internally.
If I can't afford Miele when the time comes, I will probably buy f&p.

Kitchen Things did a good job selling the whole range of F&P to us. Here in Dunedin it is possible to see the oven/induction hob etc working, which was a big plus point. And I know that salespeople will say anything but they certainly were very positive about F&P. The F&P web site is also a site to visit if you haven't already had a look - it is very slick.

At the moment we are very happy with our purchases - having all F&P appliances means that they all have the same design, which was important to us - hopefully we won't regret buying F&P

My choice would be the F & P, just for the usable space.

Where we are staying currently has a 90cm Smeg Freestanding Gas/Electric. It is OK, but I find temperature control to be a bit hit and miss in the oven, and it takes quite a while to get to temperature (could be power supply issues, the power in the area we are in can be a little flaky) compared to the cheap Parmco we had in our previous house (same size).
This place also has a Smeg Double door ice/water refrigerator and a Smeg dishwasher, which is the biggest POS dishwasher I've ever had the misfortune to use and quite frankly has put me off the brand completely.

In previous kitchens we have built, I have used F&P refrigeration and Dishdrawers (and never had an issue with either), and have bought F&P ovens and cooktops in the past. My wife still says the F&P oven we had 3 houses previously (just a cheap 60cm wall oven, 5 function) was the best oven we've had.

Not sure about the "any kitchen" bit there. There's a possibility that it just might be overkill in an average kiwi kitchen in the same way that a Hummer H1 might be overkill in an average kiwi garage.

We bought the F&P OB60SL11 recently after a disastrous run with a Westinghouse. I never thought I would be caught raving about an oven, but rave I do. The F&P is top notch and it is obvious a lot of thought and testing has gone into the design. It cooks beautifully if a bit on the hot side, and the grill actual does what it is supposed to (although as with all modern grills, cooking meat to a rare state is best done elsewhere). Haven't used the pyrolytic cleaning so don't know how good that is. The continental ovens have a lot less room inside them than F&P, so watch that one.

Just beware of the required depth, for as fitted into our units, the oven sticks out 2mm - not that you'd notice, but that is hard in with no air space behind as recommended. Most units you can cut a bit out of the back if necessary.

Also recommend an induction hob. We have one, but I haven't a clue what the more modern ones are like. The only things they are not as good as gas for, are things like cooking in a wok - you don't get the spread of heat up the sides.

networkn: I went and had a look at Bosch, I was pretty impressed, however one aspect of it, was a deal breaker for me, and that was the new control wheel. It's horrible to use and worse if you are in a hurry or have wet hands. It's now between the Smeg and F&P with the F&P leading the race for the reasons outlined in my first post.

I haven't seen the new control wheel, , but I always dry my hands when dealing with electrical devices, as I don't want water getting in anywhere. On mine, the knobs can push in when not in use. I have found though that the oven bulb blows regularly, so now I don't bother changing it.

I would agree on the dishwashers, I have found that the grey coating inside is also not that durable, as parts oave chipped off with rust showing underneath, so have a few of the metal parts on the baskets. Never had that problem with Asko.
