So. Latest update. Opened up the unit (again).. It's a real pain to get to the coils on this and requires removing not only most of the fascia but also the main control unit and air direction assemblies as well... Found a large hole out back of unit where pipes run. This was directly into into framing and insulation cavity. This being about 3 inches away from the barrel fan which no doubt has been sucking air merrily from this space as well. So expanded foamed all that up. Cleaned the coils as best we could. Then sanitised the coils as best we could. I say best we could as there is a large polystyrene block in front of them that requires all the fan assembly to come out prior to removing that. Used a new garden sprayer and used the long neck to hopefully reach all areas. Air dried as instructions said and tried it again. Somewhat better but still basically same issue.
The unit cools super quick. Appears to be fine i.e no discernible smell. If we
1) Simply switch it off then it will stink the next day when we put it back on / or you will actually smell it as you walk past the unit even without it being on in the next day
2) Put it onto fan for 20 minutes to 'dry' the coils, the sour/ musty / mildew smell gets blown into the room
So no further forward to be honest. I am at a complete loss as to why this is happening after the clean ( assuming we did that properly ). Installers are lost and fujitsu are taking the stance of - house smells.
Any further help or suggestions please prior to me rejecting this unit. Our old daikin just got on with it. NEVER had any smells from it in the 10 years we used it and simply flicked it off after cooling and away she went the next day. I can't believe a $4k unit requires so much maintenance to get it to simply work at a basic level.
This made me recall - about a month ago it happened once, to mine (quite a new unit). Normally only run on heating. But that day was a 32 degree day and I had to use it on cool. By the end of the day I switched it to heat, but the fan was on low instead of auto -> smelly socks. Switched fan back to auto, hadn't noticed since.
