richms:
PVC ones usually have their own locking solution which is multipoint rather than just a single deadbolt like wooden doors have, so if you go that way you probably will not be reusing your lock.
That's not good, hopefully they can reuse it, I have one of these

Yeah that fancy lock may be able to be embedded in the door at the factory, but I wouldn't put money on it. The handle doesn't just operate the latch on modern doors, it pushes about five metal things out so it's locked in multiple places. So your fancy lock would reduce security.
However glass doors aren't secure anyway, and with modern doors / windows you can probably just remove the trim and yank the glass panel out, that could be quicker than even breaking the window. This is why we have a monitored alarm, as a better deterrent.
Lift? is that because it's sagging? Was it not hinged properly?
I've been looking at replacing wooden windows and our front/rear doors in a 1940's house with aluminum but this pvcu thing looks better. I do like the multilock abaility.
Though reading about it seems it'd be more costly than aluminum since it needs to be imported?

Because you lift the handle up to lock it.

The handle works like normal, but when you push it up the multi-point locking engages. Aluminium is probably the same.
I just had uPvc put into my 100 year old house. It looks way better than the old old windows I had before. They're not painted yet, but when they are in a week I could post pictures. Just look on the Thermalframe website for some examples.
Ahh ok, never seen mulitock on aluminium, or lift to lock.
They don't come painted?
Pictures would be great.
The PVC doors aren't painted, they're PVC and never need painting - one attraction. You just clean them every year or so, if they get damaged you use light sandpaper to freshen them up - but I've never needed to with the other PVC doors and window I have, I just heard you can. The wood surround here was pretty old so we've had it stripped and painted. If you don't see pictures within 2 weeks PM me a reminder, I'll likely forget.
ahh thought so. so you've retro fitted into you existing wooden frame? Do they do full frame too, i know with aluminum they can remove the wooden frame and do full frame.
zyo:Do you have a photo of the entrance, as that may give a better idea of what may look the best. Plasma glass doors I think are probably as low maintenance as you can get, being glass on the exterior surface, and is it has a styrofoam core it insulates, and should be dimensionally good and not warp, while also being quite heavy and solid feeling when you open it. What is your budget. Not really that sure on the advantage of double doors, for an entrance over a single one, and sidelights. Maybe privacy so people can't see in, but can make your hall dark.
We have been considering replacing our front entrance door with a double door.
The quote we received for a double aluminium door is well over our budget (6k including installation and glass)
Fibreglass seems to be a really affordable alternative (not sure if they can be stained to look like wood?)
Any suggestions?
Only thing with glass being it'll stain hard in winter from rain and moisture, since you'll have people up close to it, it's more obvious than windows.

We had most PVC windows retrofitted into the existing frames, and two with new frame. When I saw into existing frames they didn't just replace the glass, they took out the glass and the frames around them, and just left the outer frame.
What I've been told is on a wooden house you can't get rid of the wood around the window entirely, the PVC needs something to attach to, and you still need scribers and such. I'm not an expert though, I'm just going by what I've been told.

That price is crazy IMO.
I had a set of exterior french doors made by a joiner recently. Doors are cedar with double-glazed inserts, large SS parliament hinges (so that doors can be opened out flat). The frames are very deep (260mm or so) heart rimu.
Cost for those expensive doors was about $4500. Mass produced standard doors should be much cheaper.
Either you are being had on - or there's another complication - possibly structural building work required to widen the doorway, which might involve building consent and design fees.
Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation
