Someone gave me one of those magnetic ones once. It seems to be just an LCD thermometer, so when it's cold enough outside the volume of liquid in the cylinder doesn't make much difference. Even when the ambient temperature is warmer it's not particularly accurate.

Has anybody had eny experience with the ultrasonic ones, e.g.: Gaslock GasLevel Pen?

I can see that based on the mentionings here of ambient vs tank temp.. Might be a case of running hot water down the tank, slap the magnetic on and at lats then get a reasonably accurate line

I've heard of the warm water method - caravaners seem to be particularly fond of it. Which is odd because when you're in a caravan and you want to find out how much gas you have left you have to use some gas to heat the water to find out you've just used the last of your gas to heat the water to find out how much gas you don't have left.

What about a simple load cell setup? Don't ask me how to do it but it seems that the componentry is fairly cheap.

So I'd go the weighing way as it seems the only accusate measure. Researching now. Then slap on an ESP8266 and pronto Wifi enabled tank gauge. Should be easy he says....

Yeah, Ill do that in my break!!

The magnetic thing will be here this avo. Scales is a good idea but would need to be permanent. Hopefully the magnetic will be ok, as is, or after running hot water down one side to accentuate the temp diff

You'd want to be quite careful with electronics beside LPG tanks I'd imagine?
