gzt: New vent installed?
Something loose up top with vibrations released below?
Good luck : ).
Good thinking.... will consider.
I have a aircon unit at work that make a weird sound, but only when the wind blows. Finally worked out it was water being blown back up the condensation outlet pipe - and it would get a bizarre harmonic going in the pipe - kinda like a giant pan flute, or blowing over the top of a beer bottle.
Anything like that possible here? Do you run an aircon unit? (Or have a giant beer bottle under the house ;-p)
mdf: I listened on cr@ptacular speakers. Would you describe the sound as sharp/metallic, or duller?
A dull hollow sounding thud.

There's no air con near there, but there are plenty of pipes for draining and letting air out in that area. There's about a meter under the house, on piles.
Have you absolutely ruled out ghosts?

Not yet, though ghosts probably don't weigh enough to make this noise.
On a slightly more serious note, I remember a time many aeons ago, when I attended school in a building with old-fashioned steam radiators. The noises that came out of those in the mornings when they were heating up were simply unbelievable, you would swear there was a gang of construction workers bashing them full force with sledgehammers.

Yeah, quite different from that kind of noise.
Not helpful I know, but are you sure the prior owner didn't keep his ex gf under there ;) ?

On my cheap headphones, the second noise in particular sounded quite musical (in a "cacophony of discordant notes" kind on way). I know you said ghosts probably don't weigh enough, but have you ruled out ghosts (or small children for that matter) dropping an accordion under the floor with the resulting splurge of random notes? Not saying it is likely, but presumably the more you rule out what it isn't, the closer you must be to finding what it really is...
Sorry to not have more useful suggestions. Genuinely intrigued to find out what it really is though, so do report back when you find the culprit.
Good luck

There's a bit of background noise, plus I took the recording on my phone and had to run it through noise reduction twice and amplify it, so I wouldn't be surprised at artifacts.
Really doesnt sound like a bong, perhaps that's because of the noise reduction etc.
Can you post up the raw audio file ?
It really does sound like a puff of wind blowing across the top of an open pipe. The pipe could be facing in any direction, not just upwards.
It probably sounds a bit louder / frequent than normal, because we've had a bit more wind as of late ..
Raw audio files is no good, lots of noise, very long, I cut bits out and did noise reduction. I'll try for a better recording some time if nothing comes of this lot. All suggestions appreciated.
I suspect it could be the toilet vent pipe in some way. Maybe it is cracked or something and the sound is transferring.
