Just noting I picked up a Dyson 'narrow' for a reasonable price at Harvey Norman and it's doing a great job. Our apartment has floor area of about 30m2. The Dyson does that easily on one charge.

The first clean filled the Dyson twice, the carpet is visibly lighter in colour (as is the couch) and hay fever is much reduced. It's a huge improvement on the old vacuum.

Being compact, wall mounted and cordless it's very easy to pick up, use, empty and and re-dock. Where as the old vacuum - you had to wrestle out of a crowded cupboard and it was a messy PITA to empty.

Because the Dyson is easier to use it gets run around more frequently.

Ahaha, that's half the reason we got a new vacuum too. Moving to an apartment soon and wanted something compact, and in our current flat the vacuum lives in the standalone garade which is absolutely packed and padlocked, only access is via the garage door.

Knowing that Dyson are the gold standard but not wanting to fork out $400+ we grabbed a Vax SlimVac a couple of weeks ago when JB Hifi had them on special for $175. We wanted something we could grab quickly for small messes without having to haul out the Miele. Not as good as a Dyson but definitely worth it for the price.

We got given an Electrolux. I was very skeptical to start with. We have Dyson hand held which is good except the battery is pretty well stuffed.

The Electrolux surprised as to how good it was though if I were to buy another I'd probably go with the Dyson as I think it's a better units. However the Electrolux is still a good unit.

Jumping in here, looking to see if others have had the same issue with the Dyson v6 Animal.

New machine, and while the pole and attachments do 'click' home, they don't seem to be making a good connection, so the motor in the brush head doesn't always spin. Have to squeeze everything together to get it to work, and then it'll come apart enough on the back stroke to break the connection.

I'll take it back to the retailer - just not on Boxing Day! - but wanted to see if this was a common issue

My dyson stick keeps having the trapdoor open up when moving it around vigorously, if I am super delicate with it, doesnt happen, but any stress on the end of the long pole like lifting it up quicly and the weight of the head on it will flex the dust collection vessel enough that the door will pop open. Very annoying when its over a box of stuff at that time and it dumps a cats worth of fur and dust over a collection of not valuable clutter I then have to clean.

No problem with our one, still going strong and very handy.

Take it back and have it replaced.

Same here - no issues like you report. Sometimes the head doesn’t spin if I start it when on a thick rug, but that’s about it. I agree about taking it back as that’s a major issue given these stick vacs need the rotating head to be effective!

TBH, I’m a bit surprised at the level of flex at the joints on ours, though; will be interested to see how it wears over time. Similarly, removing the canister is a total dog of an operation...

I agree, we bought the Vax one and it's awesome and 1/3 if the price of a Dyson

Our dyson is a POS!

We're getting a Vax VX63 to compliment our LG robot.

Mrs has one at her work and rates it.

Edit: Used the dyson this morning, then went and got the Vax. Ran over the same rug before even charging it! WOW! Should've binned the dyson years ago.

Update - replaced the Dyson with no fuss, and happy to report the new one works as intended. Thanks for the feedback @jonathan18 and @richrdh18 - gave me the confidence that mine was a one-off issue, rather than a systematic problem.

My daughter (8 months old) got us a V6 Animal for $493 from JB Hifi for xmas

We went with this one as the head is a lot better and it has more attachments even a small motorised one that works great in the car.

I vacuumed the house with the aging DC08 then ran over half the house with the V6 and was shocked with how much better it is (DC08 has had new filters etc recently)

I can do the whole house on max with one charge, and because it is easy run around the house every few days. I am blown away with how much this picks up even with very regular cleaning.

The DC08 is now living in the garage as it is no longer needed.

Interesting comment from @blakamin what version and the age of the dyson? I know they need a good clean out every now and then.

DC39 Animal.

5.5 years old now. Filter cleaned regularly and the rest blown out with a compressor yearly.

In-laws have a dyson stick (V6 i think IIRC) and we took our Vax around to see which was better.

We also took the lab x goldie (and our kelpie) that was the reason they/we bought a stick vac

They were close, but I think the Vax was better.

My 2c, just bought the Dyson absolute V8 from Harvey Norman, during their boxing day sales. Amazing, no regrets. It replaces our tired, but still functioning, Dyson DC19.

I bought the Vax for my elderly mother a few weeks back, to replace an Ergorapido she destroyed by running it without its collection basket and a Miele full-sized vac she destroyed by sucking up water, and I’m surprised at how good it is, given its price. Worst thing is the requirement to plug in the charging cable manually (a hassle compared to the simple solution of our Dyson), which is a frustration as my mother struggles with learning new things and is forgetting to plug it in. Certainly great bang for buck, though...
