blackjack17: why you would muck around with trying to use a water level when you could just use a spirit level. A tool that you will already have

The corner piles will be 6 meters apart. Using string line + spirit level seems like the same amount of mucking around but less accuracy.

that gets them level in the vertical, how do you get all 8 piles the same height (ie the structire level) in the horizontal? unless you have a 20/40ft spirit level

A string line. Whack a nail in a corner pile, attach the string, pull tight to the opposite corner and use a spirit level to get it level. Then with a pencil mark all the piles. The cut.

It is more than accurate for what you need. You don't need to get to the micrometer, you are going to get variation due to cutting anyway.

That's what they use on building sites, unless they use a dumpy or laser level

A string-line with a 10 cm hanging spirit level can easily be up to a cm out-of-whack over a six-metre distance. I think the OP would like to be more accurate than that.

Greendrake: It's a 20ft shipping container home. Four piles in the corners and another four in the middle. 8 in total.

That's a mighty small container home !!. Is it a split level or double decked ?

I'd be interested in knowing your progress / plans - do you have a blog, or reference sites ?

Not actually building it myself. It's the 15m2 Pod from Podlife.

I would hire a laser, just as the guys at the hire centre.. Bang-on accurate, easy to use without a helper ... and cool.

Yeah I'm still hesitant between hiring a 360 degree laser and using a water level. I don't yet know how those lasers work, specifically how do they ensure that the horizontal plane is actually horizontal? You fix it on a tripod, and the rest is done by itself?

Why would you use a 10cm hanging spirit level? My one which I used to do my deck is 1200 and my brother (who is a builder and has never used a water level in his life) has them in a range of sizes up to 1800. (He did say he rarely uses them anymore and mainly uses lasers now)

The below laser level should do the trick - $129 including accessories. Possibly cheaper than hiring one but I don't know.

I'm with Wheelbarrow01 - buy one as a) cheap b) it's a new tool! and c) many very convenient uses other than building. E.g. lining pictures up on walls. Marking lines on floors and ceilings etc.

Like a super long level and a chalk line all in one but no need to hold it in place.

If using outside you will want to get a green laser and/or laser receivers and some filter glasses:
