It's not the hose, it's what you do with it.

we have a Warehouse hose. HAd it for years and years.

Coil it up when not in use, expect it to deteriorate if you leave it stuck in the mud, drive over it regularly and yank on it to untangle it.

Kinks? Make sure it's not bent before you start to use it.

LOL or get a kink resistant hose and not have to bother unwinding every little twist and bend when you drag it out.

Which is the point.

Was going to say the same thing. I always buy the cheapest hoses I can get, and expect to throw them out at some point when they've deteriorated in the sun. The $80 super-duper-ultra hoses seem to deteriorate just as quickly, but then you feel ripped off when you have to throw them out.

I've had $15 Warehouse hoses last for eight years (and still going), while a neighbour's aforementioned $80 hose has barely lasted a year.

Gone through a couple of hoses in the last decade, I splashed out on a stainless steel hose a wee while back (spur of the moment thing, I regret spending the money on it) - however it is a good hose - as long as you don't try to run more than one sprinkler off it - for some reason if you have a second sprinkler, the pressure dies completely on through to the second sprinkler - possibly the internal diameter is less. (This kind of thing: https://www.thewarehouse.co.nz/p/as-seen-on-tv-metal-garden-hose-15m/R2355294.html) I have found that the stainless steel hoses are usually quoted in feet, rather than meters and do tend to be on the shorter side.

Our cheap $20 hose reel has given up the ghost (and leaked like a leaky thing) - I've got one of these mounted to the side of the house: https://www.mitre10.co.nz/shop/number-8-metal-hose-hanger/p/238232 - I'm quite particular on coiling up the hose after usage, so finding that method a lot more successful.

The Atlas Trade is the hose reel I use. It's a few years old and still in great condition. From memory I had the Atlas Home first, it wore out quickly.

It will be like shower hose. The inner pipe carrying the water is smaller than normal hose.

I've added some extra taps around the house so I don't need long hoses.

We've been using a retractable hose bought from Repco about eight years ago (kinda like this one), and the hose itself is still working perfectly. The only issue is that it's difficult to get the last metre or so back into the housing, but that's a small price to pay for the longevity, tidiness and convenience.

I'd suggest a key reason for the fact the hose is still sweet as eight years later is because it's not soaking up all those UV rays - almost all other hoses I've bought previously, including expensive non-kink ones, have ended up splitting. I'm guessing that even if a hose gets kinks in it, the more brittle the plastic is (as a result of sun exposure) the more likely it is to split.

BTW, these retractable ones can be moved around - ours is removable from its bracket by simply pulling out a large 'pin'. I remember I could also buy additional brackets.

Had something very similar in our previous house. They lasted about 8 years but eventually the plastic ratcheting system gave out and they wouldn't lock the hose. Man they had a powerful spring. The retracting hose could cut you in half! ;-)

Those hoses never kinked because you always pull the hose out with a straight unwind so no twists.

We have the hose below that one, kink rating of 3. It doesn't crack but the kinking is horrific

If you play Bunnings and Mitre 10 off against each other you can get it for less. When we bought it one had it for $299 and the other $298 so we got 15% off $298.

The hose is absolutely brilliant, the retract mechanism has been working flawlessly, it even has a guide to lay the hose nicely on the reel.

We've had ours for a couple of months now and are loving it.

Pretty sure that's the one I have, 2 - 3 summers in the sun most of the time as I went cheap on the hose reel which is a pain to use. No issues with cracking, just as flexible now.

I don't like the cheap hoses as I use them for filling home brew stuff and can taste the plastic. (special drinking water hose split after not very long)
