I like a green lawn but don't like the insects/grass grub killing off the fine grasses.

I have been planting and encouraging Mercury Bay Weed.

Grass grub doesn't seem to attack this.

How does that deal with lack of rain, and summer heat? I've got my lawn done in kikuyu because of that, anything else just goes brown after a few weeks mid-summer.

I couldn't get it to persist near Blenheim (hot, dry, windy in summer and frosty in winter).

Gotta love that hard as nails crap that spreads like the plague.
Pretty much every property I've been on in Northland and Auckland has Kikuyu growing in the grass if not already taken over by it.

Mercury Bay Weed seems to be surviving here in Hawkes Bay. Only been planting it for the last couple of years. Does dry up a bit during the dry months, but comes back again.

Mercury Bay Weed – Dichondra repens

Sun or part shade

Drought tolerant

All soil types

Moderate to heavy traffic

Leaves become smaller and tighter with traffic and forms a dense thatch of stems and leaves impenetrable by weeds once established. It reseeds itself annually, self-perpetuating and improving with age. Grows in sun or part shade and thrives on little moisture. Dichondra is resistant to some herbicides making establishment easy. Grows 10 – 30 mm high. Excellent between paving stones and is shallow rooted. Does not perform well under shrubs and trees.

Steer clear from Facebook pages such as Lawn Envy, And LawnPorn.

It only makes your own patch feel inadequate. (and some of them are in australia!)

The advantage is that it ends up forming a relatively dense mat that protects the soil from being burned by direct sun, so even in hot dry periods you don't end up with baked-hard concrete-like soil.
