Glad mine isn't today (it reached 43.2) and yesterday (42.1).. and the next 2 days..

And I'm glad I'm not at work again until Monday. Wearing a spray suit and mask in this sucks.
Currently inside at at lovely 26.1.
This was when I left for work yesterday....

I have a split system and have heat-pump in each room. So last night I spent the night in the guest room. And what would you know its possessed too!
It must be a fault with the pipes or something. This isn't typical noises as we have the same heat-pumps at work and have never done made these noises.

But are you at work at 4am??? And are the work ones on at 4am?
Do they have a clock on them? If so, what happens when you change the clock - does the time of the noise change?
Just a thought you don't have any friends that might have messed with you by setting a timer on it? Otherwise can you setup a camera to record it?
Annoying - would tick me off greatly.
How about setting the clock on it to be twleve hours out.
Maybe its doing some silly maintenance thing. If it thinks it should do it at 4am, if you change the clock by 12 hours it would do it at 4pm.....

Sounds exactly like the sound of ice building up and being clipped by the fan blades.
Ice buildup can be a nightmare to diagnose but start by increasing air flow to the room by cracking open a window or two and maybe leave an internal door slightly open if you're closing them all.
The pipe-noises I've heard on split systems can make all sorts of noises, from a simple rattle to a screaming cat sound and the sound can travel down the pipes convincing you it's being caused by a unit that's actually turned off. IIRC this could be caused by large differences in temperature between the two units

Thank you for your response I appreciate any ideas on what could be causing this as its waking me up every morning now. Early morning is the coldest temperature of the day which would explain the trigger then.
Some people are probably asking why I leave it on all night - the reason is the house is double glazed and without aircon it heats up to about 25-26 degrees naturally even at night. And my wife is scared of spiders and doesn't want to leave the windows open!
I will add your suggestion to the mix of my diagnosing of the fault - they are sending tech over-today to refill the refrigerant lines. So will see if that makes a difference?
I will keep you posted!
Good luck. Be sure to ask them what's next if the refill doesn't fix the problem

Thanks will do - the more I think about it the more ice build up perfectly explains the symptoms. And would explain why when I turn it off in the night for a while then turn it back on its stops the sound until about an hour or so later.
Is there water coming out of the drain?
Ok so here is a update - the tech came around and checked the Gas level it was 600ml lower than it should have been. He pumped it up I was hopeful that would have fixed the issue. But last night being the hottest night so far started making that noise again. Just like last time it was only in the wee hours in the morning.
The tech doesn't believe its ice because it would have moisture coming out of the vent....

Does placing the heatpump into heat mode for several minutes clear the issue for the rest of the night?
Haven't tried that will give that a go tonight!
