If you want genuine Hikvision that can be upgraded and won't have issues buying NZ new is your best bet. Prices from Ingram aren't actually that bad.

For Dahua there are are a few Chinese sellers smart enough to be offering good service and pricing and not selling Chinese hacks who are getting plenty of repeat business.

No idea. At the end of the day however you're dealing with security equipment and there are plenty of rules around the installation of equipment and being licenced to sell and/or buy it. Many security distributors will not sell equipment to people unless they are licenced.

I got a Dahau camera from Aliexpress and connected it to my QNAP NAS, The QNAP surveillance station promises a lot but in reality is is limited. It does however let me record 24/7. I keep a weeks data and if I need to see something I can playback to review it.

I found the motion sensing limiting outside - lots of false alerts from branches and shadows in bright sunlight etc.
You may find this an issue.
If you get IVS on the camera and it set up with tripwires, limited motion sensing areas and other advanced motion sensing options you can avoid some of these issues, but the QNAP SS does not support this.

However like you, cheap appealed to me and since I had the NAS already....

I've been toying with the idea of running iVideon for the same reason, it's distributed as, among other things, an x86 Linux app for the server side so you can run it on any old x86 hardware. I like the fact that it's a pre-packaged dedicated solution rather than a bunch of scripts and binaries that you have to tie together like ZoneMinder.

Thanks, just checking now. One thing I'd really like to get from Hikvision (which is what drew me to them in the first place) is their PIR motion-sensing cameras rather than everyone else's (invariably hopeless) video motion-sensing ones. However the PIRs are indoors only and I want them for outdoors use, I've been toying with kludging together a weather-resistant enclosure where only the PIR is exposed but I really wish they'd do a PIR outdoors camera, sigh.

Looks perfectly legal to me.

He is not recording any private space which he hasn't had permission to film. (He gave himself permission as the owner of the property).

The front of his house is public domain and anyone is entitled to film there.

Oops, meant tinyCam, iVideon is cloud-based. The nice thing about tinyCam is that you run the server yourself rather than putting stuff in the cloud.

I'd discounted Ring because you need to pay a yearly subscription. If I've spent a fortune on cameras I don't want to have to keep paying even more just to keep the thing running... also, I like having everything run in-house rather than having to rely on someone else's cloud service for it to work.

I've bought about 8-10 cameras off Alliexpress and highly recommend Xinray or my new favourite EmpireTech. Empiretech ship really quickly.
