The fridge is still going but has had all the plastics and trays replaced and the dishdrawers actually caught fire which is where the Bosch came in.

My parent's F&P caught fire as well. Must have Samsung components...

They replaced it with a Miele, which has been running with an ongoing series of faults, some of which the service people seem unable to fix. Bosch are eyewateringly expensive, but the folks I know who have one all thing they're great.

Having said that, the real answer is Consumer, not anecdotes...

Brought a Miele about 2 years ago.
Takes forever for an eco load - about 2.5 hours.

However very adjustable so you can fit a lot in.
Incredibly quiet, have it running in open plan kitchen dining lounge while watching TV and don't notice it.

Cleans well, but like every dishwasher some bowls work in the racks well and some consume 3 spaces!
Would recommend.

Brought from miele direct in Auckland, and they installed for free - was a special I think.

The 2-3 year old Bosch I have standard cycles are 2h to 2:20. If you put it on "vario speed" that cuts about in half, but the wash isn't quite as good. There's a 30 minute cycle as well, which is ok for very lightly soiled or well rinsed dishes. I do like the cutlery draw at the top.

So after a lot of support for Bosh, went out and brought a Series 6, F & P was hauled out the door, may have to build a bonfire around it and light it up.....

1st load of dishes is running in the new Bosh, really really quite....is it running??.....must be as the timer is counting down....

Interesting re F&P and some peoples history re reliability.

Our F&P dishwasher is into its 10th year - and only 2 failures - minor leakage due to a seal failure and a cracked handle on the dishwasher which i replaced for $70. Otherwise its been sweet as.

(And F&P fridge, oven, hob, washing machine - with NIL failures at same age.)

Sadly yes. Mum had so many issues with her last Faulter and Prickle purchase (dishwasher) she's now sworn off the brand entirely. After talking to some friendly repair lads she went to Bosch for both the new dishwasher and a new laundry machine after the faithful non-haier made SmartDrive laundry machine vented the magic blue smoke in terminal fashion. Both have been faultless and brilliant. And eerily quiet! The cats almost purr louder than these things.

15 years ago I would have recommended F&P to anyone, but after a fridge freezer with multiple failures and a dishwasher I would no longer advise purchasing them any more, admittedly we still have a F&P dryer that after a lot of use has just had a minor repair (Motor run capacitor replacement), and the washing machine had the suspension rods replaced a year or so ago - not really a design fault, washing machine was just overloaded with too many towels.

What I have noticed is that the dryer and washing machine are NZ designed, with NZer's use in mind, the dishwasher is just basically a re-branded Haier (full of haier parts) and I suspect the fridge is the same and that's where things have fallen over for F&P.

Back on topic, the Bosh dishwasher has just passed the WAF, dishes came out clean and very dry (compared the the F&P), so all good so far!

I've got a ten-year-old F&P fridge that's just fine, I assume it's a pre-Haier vintage. Wouldn't buy one of their washing machines though...

My ten year old F&P is ok, but little things like a drier where it needed service a few times, a washer that gets blocked occasionally because of fabric softener, and a fridge that makes a bit of a noise, I'd probably go more towards Bosch for everything next time I buy.

They are owned by Haier and that was the best thing to happen to them in years.
Manufacturing is all over the world ... Thailand, Mexico etc.

Several posters have advised going by Consumer NZ's recommendations. As a Consumer NZ member who recently had to replace a dishwasher, I am a bit disappointed with the organisation. I found I was going through the listings, selecting a candidate dishwasher, looking for a supplier and price and finding out that the model was discontinued.

The deceased dishwasher was an Asko and not a basic model either. It had an annoying design fault (fat trap would clog about once a year, fault code had to be looked up, trap had to be scooped clean by hand), it didn't clean particularly well except on its pots-and-pans cycle, it needed a new motor start capacitor after a few years (which because of our remote rural location meant disconnecting it, delivering it to the repair shop, then collecting it and reinstalling it), and it died aged 12 after at most half time use in a two-person household.

As we were a bit down on Consumer NZ's other highly recommended brand Miele (the Miele washing machine of the same vintage and usage having expired just the previous week) we ended up buying a Neff. So far, so good. Extraordinarily quiet aside from the occasional moo.
