I have a B&D 18V hedge trimmer and it doe sgood job on our hedges, which are Pittosporum, Photinia and Griselinia (all reasonably soft wood).  It will cut through finger-thickness branches.  The line trimmer in the same series is fine for the lawn edges and light weeds.  I wouldn't use it for anything more serious.

I've noticed some of the council guys in Nelson are now using heavier duty battery powered line trimmers etc.  They look husky or stihl.

The hot exhaust and fumes from petrol mowers is not good for plants. I also hate the smell a tin of petrol leaves in the car after bring it home. We have been using electric mowers for years.

The switch to electric must be good for guys who use this kind of equipment for living.  All those years of breathing two stroke fumes can't be healthy.

I'll also put my hand up for electric (mains powered) tools namely lawnmowers and hedge trimmers.

Admittedly extension cords can be a pain but there's no flat battery half way through use or continually having to charge batteries.  There's no risk in having to store highly flammable fuel or inhaling the toxic exhaust fumes.  Electric tools especially mowers are often a lot lighter to carry, usually cheaper than their petrol equivalents and are almost no maintenance other than keeping them clean and the occasional blade sharpen.

When you refer to the older 18v Ryobis, are you talking about the One+ system?

The brushed motor one with the silly little spool on them that dispenses more line on slowdown.

I have the Ego Mower and line trimmer. The batteries can be used in both. The line trimmer battery is a bit smaller physically but I can also use one of the big ones.

My 2023 sqm lawn costs about 30c worth of electricity to mow. I bought two batteries for the mower plus the fast charger so I can just swap them as I have. They last about 40 minutes and take about 40 minutes to charge. It works well.

The neighbour does shift work and he appreciates the fact it's a lot quieter than a petrol mower. It sounds noisy when standing over it, but 20 metres to the side it's very quiet.

Be careful about doing that. Noise-canceling headphones aren't as effective as passive noise blockers.

If noise levels are at a point where you need hearing protection (actually lower than what most people expect), then I would recommend doing it properly (class 5 earmuffs or earplugs). Note for extreme noise, such as working near some industrial blowers, earplugs aren't good enough.

I am considering the new Masport battery mower, the local lawnmower shop sells the Aluminium chassis version, mitre 10 the steel. Also a motor conversion option for an existing mower.

What I don't like is the fixed battery, and fiddly catcher system.

The other alternate is Green Works mower and gear from Trade Tested. Which is cheaper but seems to have good reviews.

I have lots of existing commerical grade petrol powered equipment, two and four stroke.

Full EGO kit in my garage. Mower, line trimmer and blower. Never going back to petrol unless we move to a larger property. Unlikely to happen within the lifespan on the tools.

For my lawnmower I have fitted a Masport 58 volt motor kit to my existing mower with aluminium chassis.

The kit included charger, mounting bolts, blade driver, disk and two blades. It was reasonably simple to change over.

The new electric power head in more compact and lighter than petrol engine, although it is plastic outer covers.

I charge from an inverter from 12v batteries and solar pannel.  Also bought Roybi One plus brushless chainsaw and brushless line trimmer.

Will be selling Honda mower engine and Honda GX35 multitool kit, if anyone is interested.
