Yeah you can run low voltage AC for amazing distances. Cheap cables for 12VAC irrigation solenoids can be run for hundreds of metres no problem.

DC voltage ratings often assume a single, surface-run cable. 

 

The ratings changes if you put it in a bundle, or in conduit - any arrangement that may trap heat is de-rating in the calculators I have used (e.g. Blue Seas' calculator).
