God I hope his co-workers and/or employer weren't aware of this.

Guessing that he obtained the oxygen and acetylene from his workplace. If so, then his employer would (unfortunately) probably get the book thrown at them.

The story I read said his father in law taught him to weld and he was employed full time as a welder. Didnt sound like he had done a apprenticeship or training at a tech. He may have only done mig or tig and been self taught on gas welding.

While it was a stupid thing to do I feel ignorance played a large part in it. Wouldn't be surprised if he got the idea off the internet somewhere.

I find it hard to swallow that he was a qualified welder. One of the first (bad) things anyone learning to gas weld learns is practical joking to scare people with small oxy/acetylene bombs. Supporting evidence it the fact that the "unqualified" friend listened to the hairs on the back of his neck and got out of there.

We live about 500-700m away from that. We heard/felt it.

It was a boom...we thought some truck or such had crashed into a neighbour house, shook our lace a bit and the noise was seriously loud.
