Groucho:

My two cents, go with PDL as they have a long history of quality in NZ.  We had an electrician install some extra points to which he said he'd discounted the sockets for me as he doesn't make much on them which ended up being ~$22 each.  Although I don't remember their brand they were supposedly Australian made but pretty cheap in their tactile function and aesthetics.  Two years later the spring gave out in one switch that is used most days and was a bit spongy.  I rolled into a local electrical wholesaler as a cash buyer and bought a replacement PDL unit and paid $2 less than the original cheap sockets.

$22? An HPM double socket from Bunnings is $18.49 inc. GST. Some discount! And if you managed to buy a PDL socket for less then my point about "your sparky" making a mint still holds. That's not to mention the voodoo pricing structure that most wholesalers have: first, the retail price is comically high, but no-one pays that; second, the price you pay depends on who you are, who you work for, and how the staff is feeling that day; third, the price will change depending on what else you're buying. And so on. So you can never compare like for like and you can never know if "your sparky" has offered you a genuine discount or is having you on.

Plus, it's all made in China for pennies these days. Where's the value?

Oh, and the same HPM double outlet is available at Bunnings in Oz for AU$7.35, which is $7.78 in NZ$, or less than half the price.

The cheap ones also tend to have frustrating and time wasting things like the terminal screws come tightened down, and the flushbox screws packaged separately or clipped into the back. The PDLs come with the terminal screws loose, and the flushbox screws already in the holes with o-rings to retain them.

Nearly 20 years ago I participated in a national electrical apprentice competition sponsored by PDL. I was lucky enough to make it to the final and was flown down to Christchurch where I was given a full tour of the production and prototyping facilities there. It was highly impressive what they did; from making the dies for the moulding, assembly, testing, research and development. From memory, they were developing the 600 series 30A stove switch module at the time and 3D printing was just coming on the scene. Just awesome for a young sparkie apprentice to see. Sadly it's all long since gone and nearly everything, regardless of manufacturer, is made in places like China, India, Pakistan, and Malaysia.

www.kiwisparks.co.nz have pretty decent pricing on PDL stuff if you can't get into a wholesaler.

TheMantis:

All electrical products offered for sale in NZ must meet the required standards. Of course some products exceed these standards and offer functional or aesthetic enhancements, hence differences in price. I used to swear by PDL products but the overall quality has dropped substantially over recent times. It really is a case of how much you are prepared to pay for the result you want. As a general rule though, PDL and HPM products are good quality and if you look around you can pick them up for reasonable prices.

... and sold by M10 and Bunnings respectively.

Sorry - looks like this is wrong. Both M10 and Bunnings sell HPM but M10 do not appear to sell PDL.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Economies of scale and level of competition are a bitch but so are 40C heatwaves in summer...

Thank you all.  A bit of background is that the house got all new power points back in 2010, but over the last 12 months the plastic around the screw to the wall has cracked/broken.  I just reviewed the invoice and it doesnt say the brand, but I was charged (by electrician) $60 for each power point excluding GST.  So they lasted 6-7 years and to me that does not seem enough for that cost.

In the end I just bought the Bunnings Deta brand and paid around $10 bucks.  I could not find any stories/blogs/posts from google that they are unsafe with respect to being dangerous.   If the plastic doesnt last long and they break again, at $10 per point, I wont care.

How long should you expect one to last.

"but over the last 12 months the plastic around the screw to the wall has cracked/broken"

Possibly the screws were over tightened putting excessive pressure on the plastic. They should have lasted a hell of a lot longer than "6-7 years".

You should be able to see a brand name on the switches if you have a good look at the back of them.

Was that $60 for just the power point, or was that for supply and fitting?

That was just for the power point.  The supply and fitting was done as a single big rewire job.

I dunno about their other stuff but my Deta NBN conduit is NBN approved (very rare here in Oz) and UV stable. And the installer had no issues just laying it in a paddock.

Time will tell.

Usually a double outlet is on the same circuit so supplied through the same 10 amp breaker.

It's very rare in NZ for a 10A socket to be on a 10A circuit. Usually 16-20A, and in rare cases 25A.

Funny - Mitre 10 stock a large range of PDL products...

Not all do, the range is store specific. And they seem to rotate the cheap brand at a great rate at the one near me, whereas the bunnings deta ones have been the same for ages now except adding their name on the top of the toggle for the lightswitches which is ugly as.
