We need a new range hood plus ducting. We live on Wellington's south cost, and the stovetop is on a south-facing wall. The southerly is not the prevailing wind, but when we get a strong southerly, it is _very_ strong.

What did you end up doing in the end @mdf and how have you found it a year later? I have a similar setup (south facing wall, very strong southerly) and wanting to install a rangehood. Should be able to go out the soffit pretty easily, which would avoid any roof penetrations and potential leaks.

What brand and model unit did you go for? Any other feedback?

For our new home, we got Solatube to install vent for our rangehood when they came to install their brand of sun tunnel. Much cheaper than the builder's quote and we got the bonus of natural light.

We ended up with a through-the-roof mushroom. Spoke to Smooth Air (who were _excellent_ to deal with) who recommended this as the best option in my circumstances - also supplied a rigid aluminium duct and additional backdraft preventer, and gave good installation instructions about how to put a kink in the duct. Builder installed it (and seems to have forgotten to bill me so far). Smooth Air supplied the whole kit for approx (IIRC) $200 - this included flashing, tape and silicon. I definitely didn't have the option of going out through the soffit though.

Seems to work well. It draws well and no obvious draft in the room. We do occasionally hear the backdraft preventer banging a little in the wind, but it's not loud and you have to be in the same room - YMMV if you sleep right next door or something though.
