Sounds like bad idea that's gone really bad. Compact fluorescents were never a good idea in my opinion.
We can thank sales pitches and lack of affordable LED products (until recently) while they convinced everyone flourecent were 'efficient' and long life/low heat vs incandescent or halogen. (And still do today!)
Even this 6yr old place is riddled with screw in 'tornado' CFLs as a result.
Fluorescents are more efficient than incandescent and halogen, sales pitch or no.
Whether they're a great light is another story.
Just a small matter of the mercury the CFL's contain.
We are so good at attempting to "fix" one problem and in doing so create another. How anyone thought CFL's and the mercury they contain was good for the environment I'll never know.
much of the world burns coal to make electricity and this emits mercury and other pollutants.
CFLs were a trade off. Whether the trade off was mercury neutral we can speculate. I'm happy to see them go but at the time LEDs were not common or affordable
