Sounds like bad idea that's gone really bad. Compact fluorescents were never a good idea in my opinion.

We can thank sales pitches and lack of affordable LED products (until recently) while they convinced everyone flourecent were 'efficient' and long life/low heat vs incandescent or halogen. (And still do today!)

Even this 6yr old place is riddled with screw in 'tornado' CFLs as a result.

Fluorescents are more efficient than incandescent and halogen, sales pitch or no.

Whether they're a great light is another story.

Just a small matter of the mercury the CFL's contain.

We are so good at attempting to "fix" one problem and in doing so create another. How anyone thought CFL's and the mercury they contain was good for the environment I'll never know.

much of the world burns coal to make electricity and this emits mercury and other pollutants.

CFLs were a trade off. Whether the trade off was mercury neutral we can speculate. I'm happy to see them go but at the time LEDs were not common or affordable

Getting off topic to some extent.

Fair enough so far as the rest of the world goes and I agree LED's hadn't reached prime time at that stage.

With New Zealand producing over 80% of its electricity from renewable resources that brings us back to my comment about the Clark government. I'd venture to suggest that in New Zealand the damage from the mercury in the CFL's outweighed any benefits. Why did we blindly follow the rest of the world with what was a dumb idea for New Zealand?

You're trying to drag this DIY thread into politics ...... but the answer is energy efficiency.

80% may have been renewable but in 2012 Huntly was still burning enough coal (1.3M tonnes) to produce more mercury than contained in fluorescent waste. By 2016 Huntly coal consumption had dropped to 250,000 tonne. Even geothermal steam has some mercury.

Trust me - the whole world was installing these things. Not just NZ.
Was in italy very recently - still plenty of older CFL bulbs in use.

The Aussie Federal Gov was giving away 6 per household in shopping centres about 15-20 years ago as everyone says terrible things. We got them but most of our bulbs were specialist ones so they sat in a cupboard - still there I think.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.
