there is no easy way to do what you want, different bed widths, different bedside cabinets all contribute to different results.

honestly i can see this ending in disappointment, better to have a single window that annoys the wife now but she wont notice it in 2 seeks after moving in, the bedside cabinets/ bed will likely annoy you for a lot longer

moving the windows after consent would likely need to have it gone over again by the council.

We are downsizing. That is, we're having a house build at the moment and have based much of the new house on our existing house but with a few minor changes.

Comparing the two house designs, the new house has fewer windows and smaller windows in the bedrooms than the existing house. This is to help manage the light pollution and heat loss / gain.

The company we have engaged to convert our housing requirements into a house design haven't commented on our requirements or suggest any changes.

I'd look at allowing a good 600mm out from the edges of your bed minimum. You want a 100mm gap between bed and unit - otherwise tucking the blankets in near the bedside tables is a PITA!

You've lost me a bit. Are you saying you'd personally want 600mm, but should definitely go no less than 100mm?

I'm talking about minimum space from the edge of the bed out, so saying allow for 600mm from the edge of the mattress to the outside edge of the unit (eg: gap plus unit width). That gives 50-100mm gap between mattress and edge of unit, and 400-500mm width of unit. If you went a larger size bed later, then say with 500mm width units and 50mm gap, then that's a 100mm wider bed. I don't think you specified what width unit you're buying?

Anyways I just measured mine, we have 500mm units with about 75mm gap between it and the bed.

I just moved my unit out to a 100mm gap, lay down and reached the lamp and its actually quite big so I'd say 50-75mm would be sufficient.

Regarding consent, I'm fairly sure moving the window over a few cms here or there won't need an any alteration to council consent, so long as it doesn't alter anything structural around it (eg: braceline gib, roof line etc) We made a number of minor alterations like this (that didn't impact anything else) during our reno like shifting windows slightly left or right, and even changing one of the windows dimensions slightly, and didn't have a problem. Of course, check with your builder to be on the safe side.

We haven't chosen the units, and won't until we are actually in the house.

We'll definitely check with the builder re the ease of slightly moving a window after consent. We are at the stage where the plan is pretty much ready for consent, but I keep seeing the odd little thing that I hadn't noticed or considered before now!

You're right, I don't see that there's any way to optimise it for different bed and cabinet sizes.

I'm not sure how it would go down with the better half if I tried to insist on changing it. She's fairly easy going, but I've had a couple of wins that she wasn't particularly enthused about, so might be fairer to let her have this one.

But if we did go for one of those high letter-box windows, what do you use for a window covering that doesn't look weird? One thing I definitely insist on is all bedroom windows have some sort of black-out blind or curtain.

I'm only ever in our bedroom when it's night time, I don't look out the window, and modern LED lighting is efficient and good quality, so I see no need for windows in bedrooms. Pretty sure my wife would disagree with me.

You're right, not overly helpful!

I'm on the same page as you, no windows makes sense for a bedroom. But like yours, my better half would strongly disagree.

Beware the strongly disagreeing partner. Just did a rebuild on our villa and put power points and a light switch beside where bed was going.

Until I came home one day and the bed had moved....lol

What sort of curtains will you have as the side glare from the light can be pretty bad when your head is against the wall.

Good question, I'm open to suggestions. Want whatever is best at block the maximum amount of light!

I thought maybe venetians inside the frame, with black-out roman blind over the top extending outside the frame a bit.

Hadn't really thought of side glare. Bed has a head board, so our heads will be a little out from the wall.
