Verbal estimate from two different heat pump installation companies, about four weeks ago. I got a quote for single systems, and just asked how much whole house would cost. This is for a regular sized but very old house, about 120 square meters not counting extensions that wouldn't need anything, double glazed and fairly well insulated.

$8K seems really cheap. What brand is it, and who sold / installed it?

Wasabi? Was quoted a couple dollars short of 3k for 2.7kw Daikan - back to back install. A $1200 unit, that was one very expensive install cost.

Wasabi was one firm, and yes they are fairly expensive. Similar estimate from another firm that is generally about 20% cheaper than Wasabi for a standard install.

@timmmay was from EES, now HRV Wellington.
The unit is a Panasonic S100 PE, in a house with 4 bedrooms, lounge kitchen dining open plan.

1950s House is very well insulated in all walls, roof, floor.
uPVC with double glazing on half the house, wood frames on rest.

S100PE Unit with WiFi was $4999
Installation was $1650
Ducting and grills, $2450
Pre-inspection $150

And then they gave me a $910 discount.

$8339 Inc GST.

That's pretty good. A quick look around confirms the price of the units. I guess there's a LOT of mark-up at some places to put in ducted systems, maybe due to inexperience / low volume / because they can.

It's been useful seeing the different options people have been discussing as we are looking at similar options, especially around the Multi-split and Ducted options. I've got a few of the installers coming out to get pricing and recommendations over the next few days so that should be interesting.

I do think there is some confusion earlier in the thread about the mult-split systems. they cannot both heat and cool at the same time as some people seem to think. the wording can be a little confusing as it states you can have different temperatures set, but that won't actually send heating to one system and cooling to another. If you are expecting that functionality, I would recommend you get it in writing from the installer/manufacturer before proceeding. Fujitsu actually call it out as specifically only heating or cooling at any one time.

Do you know how many duct runs/grilles this is for? We are getting a Mitsubishi ducted system with Lossnay ventilation unit installed in our new build atm and that came out to $21,358 but we are getting WiFi module included, 2 x wall controllers, summer bypass kit for the ventilation unit, 10 supply diffusers (200mm), 2x 600mm x 600mm return supply grilles. The system uses the newer R32 refrigerant rather than R410a and does 14KW cooling and 16KW heating.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Personally i'd go for a single multi room unit. I put one in about 10 years ago, cost was around $5,700 for the outdoor unit and two reasonably large capacity pumps. They haven't skipped a beat in 10 years, although you want to make sure they are installed correctly as i recall it was rather technical and took some tinkering around post installation to get them both working efficiently. Fortunately the pumps were vertically in line on the two levels so the pipes were next to each other, nice and tidy. The technology has no doubt improved since then.

I've had some varied pricing, across the quotes I've received. for our place ~130sqm (not doing anything downstairs in these quotes as all bedrooms and important living areas are upstairs) 3 bedrooms + office and big open living/dining and separate kitchen

The cheapest has been a combination of Panasonic Multisplit system for the bedrooms and a standalone Floor Console for the living space. ~ $10,500

For ducted systems these all include either 7 or 8 outlets and 2 x inlets. Most sit between 14 and 16KW heating. These also include Wifi, except for the Fujitsu units as they are living in the past - they also use R410 refrigerant still. All but the first include GST.

Fujitsu ARTA45L 11.5/14KW as Rmani above has, came in at ~$12,400 Ex GST from one provider

Fujitsu ARTA54L 14/16KW $13,000

Daikins came in at ~$14,400, $14,500 and $14,600 from three different providers, but the cheapest one included zoning in that price, and the others didn't.

Mitsubishi PEAD-M125 came in at ~$15,300

Panasonic 14/16KW unit came in at ~$12,500

I can also get the Fujitsu units installed by a team from another part of the country for cheaper than local Wellington - after covering travel, the price would be $11,500 - Wellington appears to be the most expensive place in the country for these.

I think I've ruled out Fujitsu due the the old refrigerant and lack of options and Wifi.

Just trying to decide between the Daikin Zoned unit. or the Panasonic.

Wow seems our 8k price to install our Panasonic 100pe unit with 7 grills, 1x double inlet was really good.

Our house is 120m2 but very well insulated, and our 10kw heating unit is really well suited. We get down to 0° sometimes too. 14kw sounds very over spec'd?

In winter with our unit on 24/7 maintaining 20° (heating during night and cooling during day) our power bill is never higher than $74 per week for everything.

For that cost, I just leave it on all the time. No condensation either too and there is always air flow.

We also have under-tile heating on all the time.

There are multi systems that can do simultaneously heating and cooling, but you need a commercial 3-pipe VRF system. Very $$$$.

To be honest, even when engineers specify them I generally don't think they're necessary. Sometime I'll ask one of the suppliers if they can get a count of the number of hours it spent running bidirectionally...

Ok, the Panasonic S100PE central heating + Ventilation quote has gone from $15367 to $12500. Have another vendor coming in tomorrow, will see how their quote goes.
