Build or buy: https://www.markhansen.co.nz/air-quality-build-or-buy/
Interesting read, albeit focused on indoor units.
Build is out for me, not worth the trouble. Shame the Xiaomi Mikia Air Quality PM2.5 detector is only in Chinese, plus apparently it's so inaccurate you might as well not bother. Given all the cheap ones are probably the same, I think I'll flag it and just put in a HEPA filter which should improve air quality a bit at least.
Get the HEPA filter if you have concerns about health. Small particles are a big part of the impact but low number filters don't do much to prevent them entering your home.
Would there be a benefit to running your ventilation system on a timer so it isn't active during peak hour traffic to reduce pollutant gas intake like carbon monoxide?

Yeah, I think it's worthwhile getting a higher grade filter, given it needs changing soon anyway. The filter type we have you just get a new box with a filter in it, but I might move to one of those metal box ones.
We already run the ventilation system on a timer, timed for temperature rather than reducing pollutants. Right now it runs something like 10am - 1pm which is off peak, but also 6pm - 7pm (peak, to remove cooking smells) and 9pm to 10pm to cool the place down. I could tweak that.
We use extractor fans in the kitchen and bathroom, which pull air in from outside, which works around the filter. I guess we aim for "better" rather than "perfect".
