I've had a 56 volt EGO for the past 3 or 4 years and it's still going strong.

I get 45-50 minutes run time using the 4.0Ah battery, which is just enough time to do my lawns.

There's been the odd occasion when the battery's run out before I've finished, but that's because I'd let the lawns get a bit long and/or it was damp.

I've also got the matching blower, line trimmer, hedge trimmer, and a 2.5Ah battery, so I just switch it over if I run out of charge.

I'd never go back to petrol or corded garden tools.

Also looking at moving to battery. I'd like to do something like @kotuku4, and replace the ICE unit on our Masport President 5000 AL S19 with a suitable battery unit. Just need to find a battery unit grunty enough. Barring that, I'll replace the whole thing.

Go to a Masport dealer and get a demo mower to test. They have a higher voltage option. They may trade existing mower.

kotuku4:

Great, retro fitted electric power head to existing mower.  Mower was 7 years old but well looked after, sold the used engine to help offset cost.

Lighter, very quiet and more enjoyable to use.  Charged off solar.  Can mow anytime, no one is disturbed.

Run time is fine on single internal battery, can add second battery for larger lawns.

Where did you buy the conversion kit?  Masport don't seem to list as a stand alone item and the only places I can find it online are pick-up only and nowhere near me.

I have one of these AEG 58v 18inch Brushless Lawn Mowers - it works great. The main reason for this purchase over a petrol was you can stand these up without worrying about any oil mess.

The load sensing and double battery pack means I would get around 4 or 5 sessions of 40minute mow before I go to charge. Haven't run it flat really yet.

Has quite cut diameter which is good

I looked at the first masport mowers and didn't like the way if was setup, hinged handle to get at catcher with lever on the wrong side for me.  Liked my old mower set up better, and large fabric catcher.

They later the dealer offered the retro fit motor, and I installed myself.  Small town mower and chainsaw dealer is a good guy to deal with.  Other dealers may not let you buy the power head kit, if they fitted would be too expensive.

The current model range is better, the masport dealers have full range, other re sellers lesser model options.

It was not cheap, and buying a factory mower would be better.  I recommend either use your existing mower until you need to change, or trade or sell it.

I think some have a removable battery, mine is fixed which put me off at first.

I got given an environmower. 24V. It's 6+ years now.

Honestly, I'm a lazy poo who doesn't like mowing lawns very often.

This struggles with tall to short and even moderately damp grass. This is also due to the blade needing a sharpen to be fair.

For its age, we've had a LOT of use out of it major benefit being the battery pack can use generic 12v pb batteries from anywhere.

Look at whether the battery pack of any mower you buy is able to swapped out with generics, or if it's a proprietary battery pack only.

This would add up batteries can be hundreds, and they only last around 1-2 years with regular mowing.

So my lawnmower broke down right at the start of lockdown. neat.

Went today and brought this Ozito one from buiings: https://www.bunnings.co.nz/ozito-pxc-2-x-18v-telescopic-handle-lawn-mower-kit_p0127564

Probably 300sqm of lawn. I am actually pretty impressed, with it on the second highest setting no issues with the longest grass, then did a second pass as second to lowest.

Grass was dampish - definitely not wet.

Didn't quite make it around the whole lot with the included batteries, I would normally only expect to do a single pass though.

I am a ryobi guy - have about 15 of their one+ tools but this appealed as

1. 2x 18v batteries, so I assume it's running at 36v for more power. Ryobi doesn't have an equivalent.

2. Telescopic handle is super sweet - my 10 year old is going to start picking up mowing this year, and the height will be fine for him and me

I was originally going to get the steel deck ozito, but it felt cheap (really cheap) and was quiet a bit heavier. Handles etc were a lot less adjustable.

Ryobi was fine, again not that adjustable but would have been ok.

intereating feedback, I’ve got ryobi one+ gear at the moment and looking at battery after my petrol mower died. I was considering to match my existing tools (about 7) But have wondered about selling the one plus gear and going all in ozito. The existing one plus ryobi mowers don’t appear much chop Compared to availability overseas and ozito has a bunch of tools to pair up with.

That's my thought too. I'm too invested in ryobi to get out now, but any low use tools I need from now on will be ozito. 2x 4ah batteries are 109! That's my next buy.

Then a seed/fertiliser spreader and a blower.

To add to that, 5 year replacement warranty, what more can you ask for?

Tbh definatelty a little lower quality finish than ryobi, but as you can only get them both from the same retailer I don't think it matters.

That’s a nice price for the batteries. I just checked and I’m only 5 tools in with ryobi (drill, small sander, angle grinder, saw and a blower) so i5 may not cost as much to change as I thought.

my neighbour has just purchased one of the 36v ryobi mowers so I’m going to see what that’s like before taking the plunge.

although the more I think about it I’m pretty sure I could run ozito and ryobi in parallel and just purchase one or the other as needed based on preference of tool at the time.

@CokemonZ is the steel deck ozito the slightly more expensive model for $499?
unfortunately neither of those two models is available at any Bunnings near me within $120km, and I’m not that keen to travel that far just to look and compare so I may have to wait till they finally ship some into the country (or deliver them online)

Thought I'd update this thread. Things have gone a little pear shaped...

Allow me to take you on a journey... (else, goto TLDR)

I went with a Masport President 5000 84v mower. It looked to be the business.
It claimed up to 70 minutes mowing which I figured would just get my lawn done in one charge.
It also had a catcher, mulching plug, and even a washport (hose attachment) for easy cleaning.

Everything went started out pretty well. The first time around the lawn took two charges to get done, but it was the first mow of the season and it was a bit long. We don't mow at all for about 5 months during winter.
Once the initial mow was out of the way, I was able to easily complete the mowing on a single charge if I kept on top of it and didn't let it get too long.

We treated the mower very well. We kept it in the garage, and made sure to clean it regularly. The washport did a fairly good job, and when the grass was a little too wet, we gave it a hose out underneath.

Four weeks ago, I heard the unmistakable sound of buggered bearings. I took it in for a warranty repair.
Masport declined the warranty claim, they thought (correctly) I'd probably hosed underneath it... A mower with a washport that, as stated in Masports own video, "blasts the underside of the deck".
The manual doesn't say don't hose under it, I felt I was due a warranty repair, and upon inspection of the disassembled motor, I told the dealer I thought more than just the bearing needed replacing due to the amount of rust present.
I told them I expected this to be repaired under warranty.

Masport again declined, and said that was the end of it. The dealer claimed, fairly sternly, his freshly downloaded copy of the manual said clearly to NOT hose underneath. He also said Masport were surprised the mower had a washport...

So I got my manual from the car, and asked the dealer to please show me.
His tune quickly changed. My manual doesn't say I can't hose under it, and better, I found a section that states you should if you need a better clean.

I've told the dealer that I expect this resolved, and it's my point of view that if I cant use the washport or hose under it, it's not what I purchased and I want a full refund.

And that's currently where we're at. I'm hoping that come the end of the week, I'll get a satisfactory response from Masport and I'll be trying to decide on a new mower. Again.

TLDR:
Masport battery mower, maybe 6 months old, used probably less than 20 times, has stuffed bearings.
Masport say I can't hose underneath the mower, and it's my fault the bearings are stuffed. Mower has hose attachment, and the manual clearly states I should turn the mower over and hose underneath if I need a better clean.
Masport are absolute DICKS.
