I have recently commissioned a large reciprocating refrigeration compressor (110kW motor). It is very quiet when running, the motor makes more noise than the compressor.
My conclusion is that, like already suggested, the majority of noise from a compressor is actually from the air intake(s).
Definitely try improving the silencing on them.
