Absolutely serious. I remember fixing a friend's VCR. It was full of small plastic toys pushed through the front from some visiting children.

I can work out how VCR's kids can get into (they are are at a height relatively accessible to kids), struggling to see how it could happen with a heatpump on the wall, but apparently it happens, so fair enough I guess.....

Might be another source. Check for dead mice when you open it.

It sounds like plastic on plastic. I wonder if the filters might be vibrating. It's very fast ticking noise. Maybe 5+ times a second. Sometimes it's louder than others. It's not like a leaf sound, though it's sort of similar.

Good lord. Oh well, fair enough, no, my kids would not have done this. I guess I need to pull the thing open and have a look for obvious other stuff.

i would have thought you would have had a quick look for anything obvious before posting the thread.

filter could be broken, and be sitting against the fan, could be a dead, insert insect here, piece of paper, dust, dirt, anything but until you look everyone is just guessing.

it could also be a damaged bearing, fan blade, or something in the swing mechanism

It's not a particularly easy device to get to, I thought it might be a common thing and was trying to determine if a service agent was more appropriate.

I'll see if I can get up there and disassemble it to find an obvious cause. I have a vague recollection of a service agent checking it once before and not finding the cause. They seemed a bit hopeless.

I would be inclined to get up there and have a good look to see if replacement parts are needed. Especially if you have had someone round before

no they are not, but actually being able to give a better description/confirm there is nothing foreign in it would give people more of a place to start with giving you advice.

Yes, it seems so, but it also changes, when fan speed doesn't apparently change (unless it's a very small change that I haven't noticed).

Right now it's working perfectly.

Seems more often when it first starts up, but these aren't scientific observations. It annoys me every day, but it's one of those things that I don't have time to deal with or it's late at night or whatever.

It's not as often as it used to be, that it's super quiet in my house..

Thermal expansion can cause ticking sounds, but I wouldn't expect them to be like what you're describing.

Could it be related to the louvre positioning servos? They generally only run at startup/shutdown, or if you have it on swing mode.

I’d guess noisy fan bearings.

Had a similar issue with the indoor unit of our ducted system. It sounded like there was a loose piece of plastic rattling somewhere inside the intake vent. Unexpectedly it turned out that there was a problem with the condensate drain, and the noise was water moving in an airlocked section somewhere. Seemed odd that the drain outlet was in a negative pressure part of the system.

You could well be onto something. We have had a similar issue with a noisy fridge. Amazing how much moving water can sound like ticking plastic. Think of the banging noises old-fashioned radiators make when they warm up. You would swear someone is bashing metal rubbish can lids together.

It's definitely not directly water-related, it's not that kind of sound, it's much too fast and consistent of speed.

Likely bearings dying, we had the same issue on a <12 month old mitsubishi heatpump. Was a ticking noise that wasnt too loud and wasn't always there but got worse and worse. Ended up recording it and sending the video to mitsubishi. They replaced the bearings first and that was OK for a couple of months then it came back. Ended up having to replace the internal unit.

Check this video and see if it's the same noise.
