Bought a Beko heat-pump (DPU-7360 GX) in March '14 - as we were moving to somewhere with no outdoor possibilities and pre-cast concrete walls (and I didn't want to cut a external vent hole).

 

Seven years on, we love it and wouldn't go back to a hot-air unit.

 

Super economical and notably less shrinkage.

 

Yes a cycle takes longer - but living with that has been easy for us.

 

Lint filter maintenance is easy - but more important, as the air goes round & round.
No lint ever gets out with the exhaust air (as there isn't any).
It all ends up in the filters. 

 

If you don't keep them fairly de-linted, the cycle time extends as the efficiency drops.

 

There's usually a warning light for this.

It's also quite a high fire risk not to empty the lint filters before using it again -- a builder I do work for who was an insurance assessor here in nz before he got back into building said it was pretty much number one cause for insurance claims for fires in homes!

Checking NZ Insurance data (eg: FMG website), driers don't appear to be a burning issue...

 

#1 Electrical faults (switchboard & wiring)
#2 Fireplaces & Chimneys
#3 Cooking (unattended & fats/oils)
#4 all appliances - presumably including driers

 

then arson, children (who knew), cigarettes, candles & external sources.

 

While conventional drier's I've owned (eg F&P) got fabric hot enough to be uncomfortable on the hand, our heat pump does not (probably can not) get more than warm.
I would assess its fire risk from over-heating anything (lint included) to be zero. 

 

There's no red-glowing heat element in there - just a refrigerant compressor.

 

So another (minor) advantage for heat-pump driers.

We have that - heat pump dryers always take longer than normal dryers. Don't use the quick setting. We use the delicate mode on everything except towels and bedding and it works perfectly.

The fact that the person I know had seen it often is enough for me to empty the lint every time regardless of online stats.. I guess I'm just more into prevention than waiting to see what happens
