RunningMan:

You can see this behaviour if the filter(s) are blocked leading to cavitation of the fan. Everything seems to work, it cycles on and off, but the room doesn't heat.

Thanks. The filters are clean - I clean the HP and dehumidifier filters every couple of weeks. The room actually heats, it is just not consistent. For example, I left the HP on overnight and this morning the room is 22c, with the heatpump set to 22c.

It seems this is the way it is.

Our heatpump seems to never reach or keep the temperature set. For example the heatpump is set to HEAT, temperature is set to 25c with fan set to AUTO but the room is actually 20c (according to two devices).

If we really want the temperature to go above a certain level then we have to push the POWERFUL button so the fan forces a lot of heat around - but that mode doesn't stop at the set temperature.

Anyone else seeing this kind of behaviour with these heatpumps?

Yes our Panasonic heatpump is the same. (Indoor Unit CS-E18MKR)
It never use to be like this, but the last couple of years I have had to flick it on powerful to get the room up to temp.
Maybe its a age thing must be 7-10 years old now.
Have never been happy with it and would never buy another Panasonic Heatpump.

Have you done the outlet temperature test?  If it fails that, then it is probably low on gas and needs to be topped up (and maybe have a tiny leak fixed).  Like older fridges, older heatpumps can need a bit of help on occasion.

Thanks. Ours is three years old. Noticed that if we leave it at a set temperature during the whole day - and night the room will end up being at that temperature. Perhaps  need to make sure no door is open during the day so it can do its job - a bit of a mission as we do need to open the door now and then to let the dog (and new puppy) out now and then - although we don't leave the door open with the HP working.

I've found heat pumps do work better when they're mostly left on, rather than used only as required. Depending on the season we leave ours on from 5am to 10pm, sometimes 5am to 7am then 3pm to 10pm, when it's really cold we leave it on 24/7.

I had the exact same problem in our lounge - it was the buble affect on ours. After placing a wirelesstag temp sensor on the AC and another one at sitting height found there is at least 8 degree temperature difference between the two during operation.   Adjusting fan speed to high shooting straight instead of ground seems to get the hot air mixing more with the rest of the room.

Just checking you know as @timmmay notes, they work best when left on for long periods of time.

25 degrees is rather hot, cranking them up to a high temperature doesn't make them work better, actually it makes it worse. If you turn it to 25 to get it to "heat the room faster", its not actually doing that...

I have been leaving it on and had it set to 22 C over the last few days - and it kept around that all right only to find that this morning the room was at 17 c. Change the set temp to 25 C and it took a while but the room got up there.

Despite the human sensor thing being off it is almost like sometimes it just decide to not do what it's been told...

That's really weird. Not sure if it would help but you can try out a Broadlink RM Pro if you like, and have it set the temperature however you want it every hour or two. Maybe that'll kick it along.

I got rid of the Panasonic ducted heat pump. Horrible loud thing. The replacement Daikin with Airtouch controller that went in yesterday is better in every way - quieter indoor unit, quieter outdoor, better control with the Airtouch.

What's the outside unit looking like when it's underperforming like that?  Is it absolutely clear of any greenery?  Are the fins clean and clear of any ice?  Mine gets a very light frosting at most.  Can you locate any water draining out of the outside unit like it's running through a defrost (not really noticed that on mine)? Any odd noise (mine's almost not discernable from 10 meters away)?

The unit is attached to the wall and there is at least two metres clear to the fence. Nothing running. This morning the unit was set to 22c (I got up at 4am to check the new puppy in the lounge) but when I got up the lounge was 17c and the unit was not pumping any air, despite the fan set to max speed. I then pushed the "Powerful" button and in five minutes the unit was pumping hot air - and the lounge is getting warm already.

Seriously crazy stuff.

At some point I will just change the Panasonic to another brand.

At three years old I'd be getting the people who sold and installed it back as it seems faulty to me. If they can't find a fault it's not fit for purpose, return it under consumer guarantees.

I've had Panasonic, Daikin, and Fujitsu heat pumps. I like Daikin best and only have Daikin now, and unless something changes I'll only use Daikin in the future. The Fujitsu high wall worked well, was efficient and powerful, but the Nocria I got 10 years ago was quite loud.

it if it wasn't pumping any air it might have been in a defrost mode, what was the outside temperature? if its below about 5deg c (near the dew and freezing point) then its common for frost to build up on the coils outside and this hinders heating performance as the frost is a good insulator. the unit will stop the fan inside and run the system in reverse the warm up the coils and melt the frost.

My unit has a red light on it to indicate its doing this. There is not much you can do about this.

It got down to about 8 degrees last night where M lives. The defrost cycle shouldn't take all that long, and once it's done it should come back up to heat, unless there's some weird environmental condition.
