Its not so much a thread on the inside, but a small flange. If you twist the outside i think it will clear the flange and *should* come off.

It seems like it has resisted some controlled violence. One of the YT videos showing a similar knob has the polnt of a razor knife run around the rose in case it has stuck to the paint.

I have a few of these in the house and I have put them all in myself, all with the same knobs as this one. Along with the possibility that the paint has gotten it stuck to the door, I have found that if you screw the rose on to tight is screws up the thread badly, and once its goes pass the point of no return, it needs something more than just your hands or hitting it softly.

If you get a vice grip big enough to go around the rose, you might find you'll be able to get it off. WARNING - CHANCE OF PAINT DAMAGE

Embarrassingly I have one actually screwed so far on, I can see the thread of the part you screw the rose on to during assembly and I can't get it off no matter how hard I try

Ah, good point, yeah. I'm beginning to suspect that the unnatural adhesion it's showing is due to bonding with the paint, if I didn't know the door was painted well before the lock was attached I'd say it had been painted onto the door.
