That is why I suspect oil radiators seem to be the only ones that have timers. But you still have to be careful not to cover or put things on oil radiators as they can still get very hot. I would only use a heatpump on a timer these days.

Yes, that blurb came with the heater. But the admonitions specifically warn that "a fire risk exists if the heater is covered or positioned
incorrectly", or if the heater is "unattended when in use". Neither of these cases apply to my situation.
So it would seem that timer selection comes down to the best device for the job, in terms of quality and reliability.

I use a Sonoff smart plug for my 2400W oil heater (plus about five others for a bunch of other stuff). Totally reliable and they stay cold to the touch during use.

Yep, just need someone to say that if you ignore that sign and your house burns down for an unrelated reason then your insurance will be invalid, and this thread will be complete.
Gotcha, cheers 😇

I agree with those suggesting a smart plug - I use this Arlec one from Bunnings that’s only $22 (and does energy monitoring): https://www.bunnings.co.nz/arlec-white-grid-connect-smart-plug-in-socket-with-energy-meter_p0273367
A key advantage of the wifi plug is the ability to amend the timer no matter where you are - whether it’s in bed and you can’t be @rsed getting up, or away on holiday and you forgot to switch it off… Oh, also automatic adjustment for daylight saving is another, and (in this case) you can monitor power usage of the heater if that floats your boat…
Philips hue now do smartplugs too and their stuff seems to be good quality and reliable. Not sure on the rating though.

aproximatly 3 times the price of others. Great if your in that eco system but not so if you are not.
TBH, if my home was ever going to burn down, it'd likely be because I'd entrusted control of my 2400W heater to a 'smart' phone and its potentially fallible software. A $100 unsophisticated Doro flip enables me to speak to people and that's all I need a phone for.
So, a simple mechanical timer will suffice to turn my heater on and off once every morning. Bunnings have a few such, the $4.95 'Click' model seems adequate. Thanks for all your suggestions :-)
