Not allowed to fossick at the local dump here and there doesn't seem to be a metal recycler that's open to the public.

Bugger. Our local dump has a recycle shop so are a bit more "reuse/reduce" orientated. They set white-ware aside for recycling (scrap metal i assume). You can rock in with one appliance and they don't even notice if you leave with another!! (in fact it's good because they charge by vehicle weight change).
