This kind of thing was part of the reason we got ducted heat pumps. I'm not sure ducted is a good idea in general, individual room gives a lot more control, but cooling the room is probably the only real solution. Putting an awning outside should reduce the heat, but even then you'll probably need cooling.

We got some sunshade blinds from Roman Blinds Direct a few years ago, we found them excellent. Not sure if they helped with temp much, but they're much nicer than other curtains. You can choose 1% to 10% light passing through. They can do motorised blinds, but you probably don't need that for sunshade.

Did they also do the installation?

Nope, supply only. Some people could do it themselves, but they recommended an installer in Wellington that I used. The installer was 10X faster and much better at it that I could ever be.

I've used both Roman Blinds Direct and Online Blinds (the latter quite a lot), both are really good for sunscreen blinds. I also have Venetians on quite a few west facing windows and they are pretty effective too.

At a previous address, I also found a mirror tint really effective at keeping the worst of the heat put of a room. This tint went on the outside of the window, but was a pretty quick job up a ladder.

The trick is to have external shading/blinds so the heat doesn't hit windows

the wood options look good, the space in front has a dining table and a bbq area. I’m thinking now about putting a pergola in the space with a blind so that may do the trick . Thanks for the options

The outdoor sliding shutters look great but are in Germany. Does anyone in NZ make similar?

Most builders can make these.. as they are cedar wood, with a steel frame..

I’m thinking Eva may be talking about these roller shutters which are common in Germany. We’ve stayed in places that have these and they’re brilliant.

If I was doing a new-build here, I’d seriously look at whether they are available here.

they are good. they are also often in the tilt style. however they need to be built into the house and repairing them becomes a major. a mate of a mate in Europe had his fixed. they had to remove the outside brick to get to the operating mech. on a wooden house you would want a removable panel.

you can also get them inside a double glazed window. if they fail then you replace the window.

I need shutters for stormy weather but don’t want to hijack the thread. However the sliding ones could do both sun and storms. In Wellington you have to factor in the wind issue for everything outside. The roll up ones would likely bang with gusts.

We also have a sun problem in summer and I just leave windows ajar and draw thick curtains across which helps a bit, but it’s not attractive to have guests late afternoon and having to close all curtains and sit in a dull room.

Ive found great shutters advertised in the US and wish some outfit in NZ would import and install, or copy.
