I've been looking at these too. The Mi store has them for $55 at the moment, quite a bit cheaper that PB tech, though not sure what the shipping is.

Anyone used the function where it maps out your measurements in the App?  I want to draw up a plan of our home so that would be quite helpful. Not sure if the map can be exported to a CAD program though.  Also not exactly sure about installing Xiaomi software on my phone..

I can't find any web site which mentions the Xiaomi has the ability to do a Pythagoras measurement:

"Pythagorean functions allow indirect measurements without complex math. If you know two sides of a right triangle, you can calculate the third. This feature can be a life saver, calculating distances where it would be difficult or even impossible to physically measure. In this situation, the angle measurement is especially useful."

The Ryobi (mentioned earlier) does. I'm not sure whether I need the functionality, but it would be silly to save money and then find out it is really useful.

I have the older Ryobi measuring model. I can confirm that:

  • I must be He-man, since I find the device has a comfortable heft in the hand, and have never required help to carry it.
  • I have never ever used the pythagoras (or volume) functions. Area is useful though.

Bought one today from PB. Missed the Mi store sale unfortunately.  Seems to be a good little device, produces accurate readings.  The manual does say its for indoor use, suspect the laser is not powerful enough to cope with large distances in bright sunlight. I used it for short distances outside today in overcast conditions and it was ok.

The Mi Home app is surprisingly useful for recording multiple measurements.  You draw some basic shapes with lines/ frames (and you can overlay them on a picture or photo if you want), then just touch an individual line, push the button on the unit, line it up, push the button on the unit, and the measurement appears in the app on that line.  Makes it quite easy to document multiple measurements without pen and paper.

P.S.  How did PB manage to get where they are.  Not very busy in there today.  Lots of staff around.  I was obviously looking around for something but was ignored by them all.   Went to ask someone who seemed quite unhappy that the had been inconvenienced by me. Not a smile in sight anywhere in the store.

This thread prompted me to finally order one of these things. I got a "Mileseey S6 100m" from AE for about $27 delivered. It duly showed up about 10 days later and does indeed conveniently measure stuff and seems to be at least as accurate as a tape measure (accuracy claims to be 2.0mm + 5x10^-5 D so basically 2mm out to 7mm at 100m. I think that's good enough for anything I am doing.
