Interesting comment, I actually looked at running fibre as I thought "10gig speeds!" but realised my switches are only 1gb.  But its a good idea, I have SFP ports available and just need the cable.

Come on, what's cooler? I have ethernet out to the building, or, I have fibre running out to the building. Yes. it gives you the benefits of no interference, no grounding issues between buildings, no risk from lightning, but the real benefit is being able to tell your friends that you have fibre interconnects in your home network.

I have brought from fs.com for my fibre stuff (I also have fibre in my home network) and have found them to be quite cheap and reliable.

You raise a good point, this is geekzone after all!  I had a look at fs.com, I need to cover approximately. 15-20 meters between switches (I run Unifi equipment), is this what I need?  https://www.fs.com/au/products/40191.html?now_cid=897

It depends on the SFPs, the fibre and connectors have to match what they want.

Speaking of fibre SFPs, a friend of mine who does fibre setups for a living says he's impressed at the quality and price of fibre SFPs off Aliexpress, he was expecting something dodgy at the prices but they're perfectly good.

Also a lot of 1GB SFPs are actually 10GB SFPs that lie because no-one does 1GB chipsets any more.

Just ask FS support - tell them exactly what you are connecting and what the fibre is doing and they will be able to tell you the correct products that will all work together.  Getting fibres and SFP+ units and routers and switches all matched up is a job for experts, so just let them do it.

I always do 600mm deep for the power, half fill and put the data consuit and warning tape at 300mm

I'd just run a couple of cat6 at that short distance but since you have sfp ports already available its super cheap for fiber because you dont need to buy media converters.

So yes thats the correct type of fiber patch cable to use - it should be OS2 and have LC/UPC (blue) ends.

I'd probably still run some cat6 for alarm etc and its nice to have a metallic pathway for a future cable locate that isnt the power line.
