What diode do you suggest? 
Note that I am keeping the switch mechanism because the lights have a 2 way switch (Steady/Flash) and the mechanism has a resistor.

 

 

The Pete's Emporium stores sell USB adapters for 3-AAA and 3-AA devices. 3 dummy cells and a lead with a USB plug on the end.

Thanks, however I have 4 sets of lights, which would mean 4 of the adaptors and 4 USB outlets
