martyyn: I wouldnt go near F&P if you paid me.

We bought a fridge, dishwasher and washing machine new for our house. The washing machine required major repairs after two years and died completely after four. The dishwasher blew up six months later with blue sparks and flames like Guy Fawkes and although the fridge is still going all the plastic buckets and shelves are all shattered and broken.

F&P said they would replace the 'top of the line' washing machine with a 'bottom of the line' one if we contributed $200 ourselves.

We replaced with Bosch and couldnt be happier.

Reliability stats, such as those published by Consumer, are so useful because they are a better measure of performance and support than our individual experiences.

I would buy almost any brand based calculating the trade-off between price and performance. It depends what my needs are. F&P, for example, often make smaller or narrower versions to fit older/smaller homes in New Zealand. Twenty years ago we bought a F&P dishwasher because, at the time when we created space for a dishwasher, there were only two products in New Zealand that would fit in the space we had with the capacity to wash a standard load.

I agree with others who seem to be overwhelmingly recommending German and Swedish whiteware. At home we have a Samsung washing machine and a Bosch drier and the difference in quality and performance is striking - the Bosch is well worth the extra cost. My parents have an Asko dishwasher which must be going on twenty years old now and it's been 100% reliable.

Our heat pump at home is a Mitsubishi which has exceeded our expectations.

wmoore: Top brands Miele, Asko, Bosch.

Miele is very expensive, when the build quality doesn't really appear to be much better then Bosch. The problem with Miele is that you don't get any discount on it unless you buy in quantity, as you are essentially buying it directly from Miele. It is a bit like apple in terms of the way it is priced.

Asko make the best dishwashers, and I have had Bosch and F&Ps. Askos can hold more and will wash and dry stuff better.

I've found L V Martin's service to be excellent. No idea if they sell Bosch, I don't think so after a quick look on their website.

bosch dishwasher for certain. very reliable, very quiet and very good as washing dishes. dont get the 'cheapest' models though of any brand - you get what you pay for. mid to upper ranges are more quiet, better all round.

happy with the samsung double door stainless fridge, was happy with the F&P i had prior.

i like the F&P washing machine mainly because i dont like the sound of a front loader that takes 2 hours for a small wash.....

have a delonghi oven and gas cooktop which are 'ok'. if i had to but an oven again, i'd buy one with the pyrolytic auto cleaning option.

1900's house?  Before you get a heat pump, you'll want to be insulating, unless somebody has done it already.

Heatpumps are not great ideas without insulation to keep that heat/cold where the pump pumps it.

A good point for any age house even though he actually says "1990's"

Insulation generally has a positive payback.

Agree that insulation is vital before you bother adding heat, otherwise you'll end up with a marginally warmer house and a heck of a power bill.

I think F&Ps washing machines are quite good for their price (their lowest models). But that is probably the only F&P thing I would buy.
Samsungs latest fridges freezers look good, and look very similar in style to the bosch ones..

Hopefully not too late to add my 2c worth on this.

Many years ago I worked for a company that had an electrical appliance repair dept.  Being in the market for a dishwasher I asked them what was most reliable.  They said Miele, because they only ever saw ones that were 20+ years old.  That was 16.5 years ago, and our Miele hasn't missed a beat.  Also amuses us when we visit others and see how thoroughly they rinse their dishes before placing in their less expensive machines in order to get them clean - our Miele does a very good job with minimal attention to what you throw in it.

I would certainly not hesitate to buy the same again.

Never had any problems with any of the 7 F&P appliances at our house. All seven years old.

I have an F&P washer, drier, and fridge. The drier has been repaired twice, mostly recently today, a new bearing as it was making a heck of a noise. The washing machine has been unclogged once, they said it was because I used fabric softener, but I was using the type that came with the machine!

Overall i'd call F&P reliability acceptable, just.
