Niel: My wife was stuck 15 times while waling in a bush with the kids,

But did she get any wales?

Edit: Best typos I have seen for a wale.

Check out this wasp nest from the local paper yesterday. Put a someone in hospital despite wearing a beekeepers suit.

(sorry about the onlne reader link, best one I could find)

I had the same problem with wasps in the eaves a few years ago (got stung while painting two stories up).
So I used the white powder on the entrance outside and put a Robocan automatic flyspray up in the ceiling space.
That did the trick

I've used fly spray (2 cans - 1 in each hand) to combat paper wasp nests for several years. Never been stung while doing that. I get quite a few little nests around the property (rural). When I say little they are all smaller than a cricket ball.

but very happy to save money :D

the best "spray" then?

any cheapo can of aerosol lighter fluid and a lighter

or wait till sunset and a jar with a good lid and some scissors place the jar over the nest cut it away an place the lid on the jar leave it in the sunniest spot you have they all die from the heat

That's fine for paper wasps, they're pussies and they nest in the open.

A good German or Common wasp nest might be the size of a basket ball, and they hide them in the ground or somewhere else hard to get to. You try flyspray on one of those and you're going to have a bad day.

with that in mind I'd probably go with the can of gas a funnel and a match

riahon: I usually wait until sunset when they are less active and all there. Then unload a can and make sure you have unobstructed escape path. Next day sweep them up.

Used to be able to get "surface spray" that had same ingredient as fleabombs but haven't see it for a while, although there are a few more expensive products on supermarket shelves with the same ingredient. I once tried normal flyspray and didn't do much. Tried the surface spray and they all just dropped dead.

Time to find a new industry!

We have no exhaust fan in our ensuite bathroom so are in the habit of showering with the window open to let the steam out and stop condensation. Just in the last month we have started getting a lot of wasps coming in the window from the moment the bathroom light goes on. I spent hours the previous weekend looking around the eaves, the ceiling cavity, under the ivy growing over the retaining wall behind the house, and all through the bush at the back of the section, trying to find a conventional ball-shaped wasp's nest. Then just last Saturday morning I spotted it - they were coming and going through a hole about a metre up a dirt bank only a few paces from the window. So, off to Mitre 10 after breakfast and bought a bottle of Kiwicare No Wasps Insecticidal Dust and after dark that night I gave the hole a good squirt. There were still a couple of wasps on Sunday morning, but nothing since.

If you want to find a German or Common wasp nest, pit a piece of sweet fruit like watermelon out where they can get to it and watch.

Wasps come in from all directions, but they go straight home. Probably why they call it "making a bee line".

When I was a kid, we had a pile of peach stones from preserving, and it was crawling with wasps. By watching the direction they went, we pinpointed exactly where the nest was. About 500m away, down a hill on the other side of a stream. Some carbaryl in the entrance at night and they were gone.

My grandfather used to use petrol (which does work), but he learned the hard way that you DO NOT light it. It blew the dirt off the top of the nest and made the wasps a touch grumpy.

No, my wife had weight loss surgery because the issue is genetic and she developed back/joint problems. Today, about 1 1/2 years later, she is less than half the weight she was and she does not mind me talking about it at all ;-).

I went fishing on the weekend (second time ever) and amazed how wasps are attracted to fish bait that was left on the rocks.

You can never have enough Volvos!
