(I have not read everything in this thread.)

You can buy a lighter socket with fly leads from Jaycar and crimp terminals for an SLA to it.  Then use a USB lighter plug adapter.  But yes, most cheap ones (and some expensive retail ones) are crap.  It is not about the components they use, but rather how it is assembled and the amount of heatsinking provided and the wire thickness.

There is usually a fuse inside lighter plugs, often you unscrew the tip of the plug where the positive contact is.  I've seen it inside lighter plug USB adapters also, but only in the full sized adapters not the miniature ones.  The miniature ones usually have a self resetting thermal fuse (or supposed to).

And you know for Apple products you can't use the same adapter as for other products.  Apple requires a specific voltage divider on the USB data lines before it will go to max charging current.  The newer iPads will actually run flat while connected to an adapter that does not have the resistors to identify it.  Virtually all other brands of products you just have to short the data lines out (which is the official USB battery charging spec).  If it was not against the forum usage agreement, then I would call apple something else (I design product that has to also work with Apple, don't get me started).

You can never have enough Volvos!

Thanks Neil, I think I have a solution from ebay. Interesting though. We don't use Apple stuff at home.

In case anyone else is looking I have one of these on my boat.  Well made.  You can USB ony ones as well.  Blue seas/Narva/Hella make good stuff.  If it survives on my boat it will cope with a UPS cabinet

They had some of those mountable lighter/USB outlets at supercheap, but again its something you can ebay/aliexpress/dx for way less if you are happy to wait.

Im actually looking for an inline stepdown from car voltage to a quickcharge 2.0 USB lead to put in the car to charge the phone. Lighter sockets always seem to work loose with driving and then you get to where you are going and the phone is half flat.

Heres one of them. http://www.aliexpress.com/item/2015-12V-24V-1A-2-1A-Motorcycle-Scooter-Car-Boat-Dual-USB-Charger-Power-Adapter-For/32323215907.html

plenty on there if you search motorcycle USB.

Searching for car brings up all the ones that plug into the ciggy lighter.

I have also had a few of those inline ones before that are the black box with 2 wires on one side and 2 USB sockets on the other side. The USB pins were open circuit so nothing charged fast on them except for USB powerbanks, 400-450mA was it for any of my notes or S3. iPhone wasnt fast but I never put a chargerdoctor on one off it.

Thanks Rich. I already ordered something like that from ebay, the car version.

timmmay: The problem with a cigarette lighting is connecting the battery terminals to the strangely shaped terminals.

cut them off and crimp on a suitable terminal that works?

Cut what off? Connecting one of these to an SLA battery would be a pain.

he meant the female cigarette lighter, crimp some wires onto it that go to your battery, preferably through a fuse... Then you just plug a normal charger into the cigarette lighter socket as needed.

Time to find a new industry!

I could just plug it into my car and charge it out there. They're around 50AH @ 12V, so more like 100AH @ 5V. That'd charge a phone a fair few times, though I wonder how long before the car wouldn't start.

Just watch the voltage of it. Healthy battery of the correct CCA for the car should crank ok down to 10 ish volts. Under spec or faulty and who knows tho. Not something to risk in an extended power outage.

Also most stupid cars need the key on before lighter will work so you would want to go direct to the battery so same thing with connecting it as the SLA has.

Yeah, true. I've ordered the ebay one to run off a big SLA inside anyway, so unlikely to happen. Plus I also have a battery pack from my camera flashes, 10AH or so, has a USB port. So I'm really going for overkill.

My cheap ebay car charger arrived and works well - it charges my phone at 1200mah. Success!

Next question. How can I charge a 12V SLA battery from a 5V USB source (a solar panel)?

Charging from solar is hard since the output collapses when you try to take too much power so a simple dc to dc converter will not work.

Probably easier to charge a 3.6v lipo instead.

I plan on getting a couple of power banks, so the solar can charge the power bank and the power bank can charge the 12V battery, if required. Hopefully there's a better solution though.

Hope the cell towers keep going so the phones you are charging work! You've got to hope the people you are ringing have UPSs as welllaughing
