I have a cheap Black&Decker Matrix 18V Li drill. Be interested to know what the charger smarts is,

If you can post photos of the charger circuitry, there are enough geeks on here to tell you whether it's got a decent charge controller or not.

The matrix ones I have just terminate the charge, they do not re charge at a later stage if the battery is sitting in them and seem to deplete them slowly if left in the charger and unplugged.

Ok I guess I just don't leave the battery there long enough for the self discharge to become that noticeable.

I bought the Ozito Corded Hammer Drill from Bunnings for $45.

It is heavier than I expected so just as well it has that extra handle, I will need both hands to hold it.

The hammer function can be turned off, so it can be just in drill mode.

I bought husband 2 DeWalt drills. 2nd hand.

Been going now for years and years, replaced batteries a few years ago - one from Amazon, which was $48 inc shipping and the other for $80 inc shipping.

This goes against everything I believe in. The moment that 9ah milwaukee battery came out I bought 3 and would recharge them once a month, though I am installing radio dishes and cabling all day.

Depends what you're doing. I get tired arms working overhead with 4AH battery - also with loop in tool-belt to clip driver and/or drill, having both on the belt, it's damned uncomfortable / carries risk of inadvertent down-trou. The M18 charger is very quick - but of course if you're out in the sticks and don't have an inverter handy, that's not much benefit.

The small batteries are useless in high-drain tools, angle grinder etc. OTOH I'd never carry those clipped to a belt. I should probably get a 9AH battery or two. The M18 brushless 125mm grinder is a terrific tool - very nice to use - smooth, torquey, very easy to fit/remove/shift guards - and a heavy battery on the end a benefit IMO - balances and steadies it.

Those Milwaukee tools look great.

I'm so far down the 18V B&D path though, there is 'little prospect of return'.
