Found the downside of the automatic one (Raid I think I was using) was the significant mess around it.  On any sort of hard floor there was a patch of residue which was very slippery.  The ceiling above it has had the paint dissolved.  Plastic trim on a fridge started dissolving from when I had it sitting on top of that.  And when I accidentally pointed it at a painted wall, the paint on that started dissolving also.

Otherwise seemed fairly effective at significantly reducing the insect incursion.  Way fewer flies, no more ant incursions and the spiders seemed relatively unaffected.  Though smacking whitetails with something solid seems to deter them from living.

Ditto to this. I made the mistake of turning the contraption around the wrong way, pointed towards the wall and leaving it on over a period of weeks, and when I finally noticed, there was a large, soggy area of peeled paint in the lounge.

In terms of getting rid of flies, a strip of fly paper from the $2 shop hanging from our vaulted ceiling works wonders - after a couple of weeks, the thing is more fly than paper. Rather disgusting, but living next to a farm means it is rather unavoidable.

My wife could kill a fly with a spray bottle filled with only water. She unloads so much fly spray onto each offender they suffocate before the poison has any chance to take effect.

I bought back some Jumbo Vape from Cambodia in September. A pleasant orange smell.

I think it hails from Japan, but wherever it comes from, it kills anything, fast - including cockroaches in less than 30 seconds...! Flies etc stand no chance.

andrewNZ: I've found the electric tennis racket to be far more effective (and satisfying) than spray.

Same here. They are about $8 at Mitre 10, plus a couple of AA batteries....and they go a great job of:

1. Killing any flying bug.
2. Avoiding layer after layer after layer of spray residue on everything I own.
3. Unlike regular fly swatters there is no bloody mess on the wall or ceilings.
4. Good fun and exercise.
5. That satisfying sizzling sound and blue flashes as the wee bugs fry they die.

Just be careful with stuff brought back from Asia, particularly stuff that's vastly more effective than what you get locally, because it often contains fairly dangerous poisons that aren't available here for a reason. Chinese ant chalk is a prime example.

Rickles:

For a number of summers now I have used the auto-spray system ... firstly the Mortein spray definitely "kills them dead", and secondly the mist seems to set up a barrier that prevents flies etc coming in anyway (even with all doors open and I live across road from bush reserve).

Best of all, the hypoallergenic version doesn't seem to aggravate or harm people with hay fever, babies, or animals.  Also noticed that bumble bees are not affected by it wink

Refills last a couple of years!

My mortien autospray is lucky to last couple of months, and it certainly doesnt stop the flies coming in ans buzzing around until they die on the kitchen bench or something. One of them crapped out recently so replaced it with the Expra ones, allows you to set for day or night so should save a bit. One in bedroom set to daytime only.

EDIT: hoping they are effective against cockroaches too, not really sure yet.

Time to find a new industry!
